At that time, 2 shooters Hoang Xuan Vinh, Tran Quoc Cuong of the Vietnamese shooting team competed in the men's 10m air pistol.
Shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh ranked 4th in the qualifying round (581 points) to have a spot to compete in the final.
In the final of the event, Hoang Xuan Vinh achieved a total of 202.5 points, winning an Olympic gold medal.
In addition, the result was also recognized as an Olympic record in the final of the shooting event.
Meanwhile, shooter Tran Quoc Cuong ranked 22nd in the men's 10m air pistol shooting event.
After 10 years, the above achievement is still the only Olympic gold medal that Vietnamese Sports has at this time.
The Vietnamese shooting team has not been able to win any more gold medals at the Olympics even though they continued to participate in the Olympics in Japan in 2020 and the Olympics in France in 2024.
Shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh has finished competition and switched to coaching work.
Currently, coach Hoang Xuan Vinh is the head coach of the Army Sports Shooting Team.
Shooter Tran Quoc Cuong is also out of competition and is undertaking training work at the Vietnamese shooting team.
Since the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics (Brazil), up to this point, the Vietnamese shooting team has had another significant result in the men's 10m air pistol event, which is the gold medal at ASIAD 19 in 2023 in China by shooter Pham Quang Huy.
At that time, coach Hoang Xuan Vinh participated in the coaching staff of the Vietnamese shooting team and directed Pham Quang Huy to compete.
Currently, the Vietnamese shooting team is preparing professionally for ASIAD 20 and aiming to compete for a spot to participate in the 2028 Olympics in the US.
