Quynh Hong flower and ornamental plant village in Thai Binh is bustling during Tet season

Thai Binh - The atmosphere is bustling and busy in the flower and ornamental plant growing village of Quynh Hong commune (Quynh Phu district) as the Lunar New Year of At Ty is approaching.

Quynh Hong commune has 10 villages, of which 4 villages (Binh Ngoc, La Van 1, La Van 2, La Van 3) are villages with a tradition of growing flowers and ornamental plants with a total area of over 40 hectares.

In recent years, taking advantage of the rich soil, the locality has advocated replicating and mobilizing people to develop this model.

This year, after the impact of storm No. 3 Yagi, it seemed that the commune's flower and ornamental plant growers had lost everything, but the local Party Committee and government directed the Agricultural Service Cooperative to focus on disseminating and instructing growers on techniques and care methods to recover after the storm.

These days, in the flower and ornamental plant village of Quynh Hong commune, households are busy carrying out the final steps to make the flowers bloom on time and the ornamental plants most beautiful to meet the consumption needs of the Tet market.

Mr. Vu Quang Hieu’s family (living in Binh Ngoc village) has been growing ornamental plants for over 30 years. Every year, about a month before Tet, he and his wife are always there early in the morning to take care of the peach and kumquat gardens and wait for customers to place orders.

Mr. Hieu said: "This year, due to the impact of the storm, the trees grew poorly, but thinking about the effort spent all year in vain, growers like us tried to take care of them. Luckily, after the storm, the trees grew well and have produced fruit. Up to this point, all 400 kumquat trees of my family have grown well, with beautiful canopies, large and even fruits. My family has sold 200 trees wholesale to customers, and the remaining 200 trees are for retail sale."

With 200 peach trees, thanks to proper care and timely leaf stripping, they are budding and sprouting. Mr. Hieu's family only hopes for favorable weather so that the peach trees will bloom in time for Tet.

This year, due to the impact of storms, flooding and many other reasons, the price of ornamental kumquat trees is higher than in previous years. On average, a kumquat tree costs from 600,000 to 700,000 VND, a beautiful tree costs from 1 to 2 million VND, compared to 2023, the price is 200,000 to 300,000 VND/tree higher.

After deducting expenses, each peach and kumquat garden brings in an income of 60 - 70 million VND, with some gardens earning up to 80 - 90 million VND, helping Mr. Hieu's family have a stable source of income.

In the villages of La Van flower village, Quynh Hong commune, at this time, flower growers are also busy preparing the final stages for their flower gardens to bloom on time.

This year, Ms. Pham Thi Yen's family (residing in La Van 1 village) planted 3 sao of raspberry chrysanthemums and crystal chrysanthemums. Storm No. 3 caused 2 sao of raspberry chrysanthemums to grow poorly, and the flowers did not bloom as beautifully as in previous years.

Luckily, after the storm, Ms. Yen was able to plant 1 sao of crystal chrysanthemums, and the plants grew well. At this time, she focused on taking care of them so that the flowers would grow big and bloom in time for Tet.

"Flower growers only look forward to Tet. When they first planted the plants, they encountered storms and rain, so they grew poorly, but I still tried to take care of them. Now, the plants are producing many buds. There is still one month left until Tet, if the weather is favorable and prices are stable, my family will have a decent Tet," said Ms. Yen.

According to Mr. Vu Dang Dong - Chairman of Quynh Hong Commune People's Committee: "Compared to other crops, growing flowers and ornamental plants has higher economic value. Therefore, people in the commune are always attached to the profession.

This year, due to the impact of the storm, flower and ornamental plant growing areas were affected, but people still tried to take care of them. Up to this point, in general, flowers and ornamental plants in the villages are beautiful, and many customers have come to order. According to calculations, after deducting all expenses, income reaches 60-100 million VND or more for one sao of intensive flower cultivation. Thanks to that, the economy of households is quite stable."
