Founded in August 1945, the Vietnamese diplomatic sector was directly founded and laid the foundation by President Ho Chi Minh. From the beginning, the Party and Uncle Ho attached importance to diplomatic roles as a way to protect national interests.
During the period of 1945 - 1946, the country faced a situation of "the scale hanging on the barber", diplomacy has maintained the achievements of the revolution, preserved the people's government, and extended the preparation time for resistance. Documents such as the Preliminary Agreement of March 6, 1946 and the Inter-relemma Agreement of September 14, 1946 are important milestones.
During the resistance war against France (1946 - 1954), diplomacy both served the battlefield and broke the isolation and expanded international relations. diplomacy contributed to creating a fight alliance with Laos and Cambodia, promoting China, the Soviet Union and many countries to recognize Vietnam, forming an international rear for the resistance war.
After the victory over Dien Bien Phu, diplomacy successfully negotiated the Geneva Agreement 1954, ending nearly 100 years of colonial rule, affirming independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During the resistance war against the US (1954-1975), diplomacy became an important front of strategic significance. After 1975, Vietnam gradually broke the embargo, restored relations with China and ASEAN, developed relations with socialist, unally Associated, developing countries, became a member of the United Nations (1977) and many international organizations.
From 1986 to present, diplomacy has played a pioneering role in creating an environment of peace and international integration. diplomacy contributes to solving the problem of Cambodia, effectively handling the problem of "ship owners", opening the way to restore dialogue with major countries and the region.
Since the 1990s, Vietnam has expanded and upgraded foreign relations, established diplomatic relations with 194 countries, and had a network of 37 or more comprehensive partners, actively participating in more than 70 international organizations. diplomacy contributes to peaceful resolution of border issues, consolidating regional stability, actively participating in the development of international law, and promoting the process of developing a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
Multilateral diplomacy has enhanced Vietnam's position, from ASEAN, APEC, WTO to the United Nations Security Council and the Human Rights Council. Vietnam joins the peacekeeping force, affirming its role as a responsible member. Economic diplomacy has contributed to making Vietnam a leading economy in the region, joining the group of 20 countries with the largest trade in the world.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized that in the context of international fluctuations, diplomacy continues to promote its role as a "pioneer, important, and regular" to realize three strategic goals: Security, development, and national position. diplomacy must connect internal resources with external resources, expand cooperation in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, digital transformation, green transformation. At the same time, enhance Vietnam's contribution to global peace, cooperation and development.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that entering a new era, the Vietnamese diplomatic sector will continue to strive, promote the pioneering spirit, continue to write glorious pages, serve the Fatherland and the people.
