On April 24, Standing Deputy Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee Le Van Nung, on behalf of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, signed Notice 771-TB-TU, saying that the province has decided to stop naming new communes and wards with the associated units (Central, Eastern, Western, South, North).
This is the result agreed upon at the thematic conference of the Provincial Party Committee Executive Committee held on the same morning.
It is known that after receiving mixed feedback from the people about the plan to name new communes and wards with the status, the 11th Provincial Party Committee held a thematic conference on the morning of April 24, 2025.

The conference gave opinions on adjusting the names after the arrangement of some communes and wards in the Project on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units in An Giang province.
After discussion, the Executive Committee decided: Agree on the policy of adjusting the names of some communes and wards associated with the local historical tradition, and not taking sides to name them. Specific names proposed by districts, towns and cities must ensure that they do not overlap with the names of communes and wards after the reorganization of An Giang and Kien Giang provinces.

It is known that previously, with the rigid application of the plan to name communes and wards associated with the status, many localities were in a state of "conforming to place names". Typically, Phu Tan district has 18 communes and towns with different names, but the arrangement of the remaining 6 commune-level units is only Phu Tan name. In addition to the name of Phu Tan, Phu Tan is associated with the Central, East-West, South and North regions.
