On the morning of September 23 local time, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the 80th United Nations General Assembly High-level Discussion Session opened with the theme "Better Together: 80 years and beyond for peace, development and human rights".
The meeting was attended by nearly 150 heads of state, heads of government and senior representatives of many member countries, along with many leaders of international and regional organizations.
Politburo member and President Luong Cuong led the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation to attend the meeting.
Reporting on the world situation and the activities of the United Nations, Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated that the world is moving towards a multipolar world and needs an effective multilateral system to avoid repeating the lessons leading to the First World War.
Mr. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations is a guideline in ethics, a force for maintaining peace, protecting international law, promoting sustainable development, ensuring human rights, turning global decisions into concrete actions.
The General Secretary emphasized that in the current context, the international community needs to have 5 correct options.
First, peace must be based on international law.
Second, it is to ensure human rights and dignity by implementing international commitments on human rights, including through increasing resource mobilization and reforming the international financial system to continue implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Third, promote climate justice and climate action, through sustainable and equitable energy transition and ensuring green climate resources through financial mechanisms and policies.
Fourth, the use and exploitation of advanced technology and artificial intelligence to serve the development of the world and humanity.
Fifth, it is necessary to build a more inclusive, transparent and ready United Nations for the 21st century, including the UN80 Reform Initiative and a 2026 budget amendment to enhance accountability, improve supply and cut costs.
Speaking after the opening session, US President Donald Trump said that the United Nations is an organization with great potential, but there are still many problems that need to be resolved. For the US, President Trump affirmed that he has achieved many successes in internal and external affairs, including helping to end 7 conflicts in the world, reaching tariff agreements with many countries, including Vietnam; and emphasizing the need to end the conflict in Gaza.
Meanwhile, many senior leaders of countries said that the world is facing unprecedented challenges, expressing strong support for the central role of the United Nations in the multilateral system, promoting international law, reforming the United Nations to respond to unprecedented challenges, enhancing international cooperation, mobilizing financial resources, especially green finance, cooperation and sharing scientific and technological progress.
