On April 25, according to information from Vinh City People's Committee, the City People's Council is holding a meeting to review and approve a resolution on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units according to the Project directed by Nghe An Provincial Party Committee. Previously, the arrangement plan included merging 33 commune-level administrative units into 6 new wards, temporarily named Vinh 1, Vinh 2, Vinh 3, Vinh 4, Vinh 5 and Cua Lo ward.
This option has caused controversy, especially among researchers and local history lovers, because they are concerned that the numbering name will lose the long-standing place names that have been associated with the memories and identity of Vinh city.
Vinh City leaders also proposed a second option to collect opinions, in which the suggested ward names are: Vinh, Quang Trung, Quan Bau, Ha Huy Tap, Cua Hoi and Cua Lo.
After widely collecting opinions in residential areas, up to 95.94% of households agreed with the plan to keep the names in order from Vinh 1 to Vinh 5 and Cua Lo.
This result reflects the high consensus among the people, helping the city facilitate the submission to competent authorities for approval, said Mr. Tran Ngoc Tu - Chairman of Vinh City People's Committee.
Vinh city currently has an area of 166.22km2, a population of over 580,000 people, and is the city-level administrative unit with the largest number of communes and wards in Nghe An province. After the arrangement, Vinh will have only 6 wards. Some boundaries have also been adjusted, such as Le Loi ward moving to Vinh 2, Hung Phuc merging into Vinh 1.
Speaking at the meeting of the Nghe An Provincial Party Committee, Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Duc Trung emphasized that the naming of administrative units must ensure compliance with reality, create high consensus among the people but still maintain the progress of the project.
The consensus result of nearly 96% is this time considered a positive signal, showing the increasingly clear awareness of urban people's participation in building a government, while creating a solid foundation for Vinh City to enter a new stage of development.
