According to the Project on arranging commune-level administrative units of Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh Province, 10 communes and wards of this city are expected to be merged into 3 new commune-level administrative units.
In which, Quang Trung, Thanh Son, Yen Son wards merged together and took the new name of the current Uong Bi city.
Bac Son, Nam Khe, Vang Danh wards and some areas of Trung Vuong ward were merged into Vang Danh ward.
In particular, Phuong Nam, Phuong Dong wards and Thuong Yen Cong commune were merged together to form Yen Tu ward.
According to the representative of Uong Bi City, not taking the name of one of the three communes and wards above to name the new commune administrative unit as other places are doing, but taking the new name is Yen Tu ward because the famous Yen Tu landscape globally, mainly located on the administrative boundary of Thuong Yen Cong commune.
Although there are some different opinions, many people agree with this plan because Yen Tu's name is too big and also in line with the policy that the name of the commune-level administrative unit needs to be easy to read, easy to remember, concise, ensuring systematicity, science, in line with local historical and cultural traditions, associated with the place name and supported by local people.
Currently, most commune-level administrative units in Quang Ninh after the merger are named after one of the commune-level administrative units in the merger group, or have the name of the district-level administrative unit for the commune-level administrative units in the center.
According to statistics, there are also a number of provinces and cities, including Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, that have named commune-level administrative units after the merger in conjunction with place names, history, and culture.
Some provinces and cities have named administrative units with additional serial numbers, but after listening to public opinion, they have changed and researched to name new numbers, no longer using serial numbers.
According to the Project on arranging commune-level administrative units of Quang Ninh in 2025, Quang Ninh will develop 2 options to submit to the Central Government for consideration. In which, option 1 is to arrange 171 commune-level administrative units into 51 units, including: 27 wards, 21 communes and 3 special zones (Van Don, Co To, Mong Cai).
In case the Central Government approves 2 special zones (Van Don, Co To), the commune-level administrative units of the whole province will be arranged into 54 units, including: 30 wards, 22 communes and 2 special zones.
