On October 16, during his working program in Quang Tri, General Secretary and President To Lam and the Central Working Delegation visited and surveyed the lives of officials and people living and working in Con Co island district, according to VNA.
After listening to local leaders and representatives of the armed forces report on the construction, development and protection of Con Co Island, General Secretary and President To Lam expressed his emotion at the warm sentiments and thoughtful reception of the Party Committee, government, soldiers and people of the island district; saying that this was the first time he had visited Con Co Island - known as the "green pearl on the fiery land of Quang Tri".
Emphasizing the impression of Con Co Island with its rare natural beauty, peaceful in the middle of the vast sea and sky, full of vitality and steadfastness, defending the sovereignty of the outpost of the Fatherland, General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Con Co Island has a particularly important position in the sea and island strategy, being an outpost island protecting national sovereignty.
Based on the potential and advantages of Con Co Island in economic development associated with national defense and security at sea, the General Secretary and President suggested that the island district continue to strengthen national defense and security at sea, paying attention to the interconnectedness of national defense and security between Con Co and other islands.
At the same time, build Con Co into a solid defense area, maintain political security and social order and safety, ensure a favorable environment for socio-economic development, and link socio-economic development with strengthening national defense and security potential.
General Secretary and President To Lam also requested to take good care of the material and spiritual life of cadres, soldiers, and people living and working on the island, ensuring adequate education and health care conditions for the people. In particular, consider implementing the policy of exempting tuition fees, medical examination and treatment costs, and full health insurance for children living on the island, and supporting 100% of the cost of buying health insurance cards for people living and working on the island, not lower than the benefits on the mainland.
The General Secretary and President requested the Government to direct all sectors and levels to ensure the supply of electricity, clean water, and adequate and stable telecommunications services for the islanders, meeting the needs of daily life, production, economic development, and tourism. Along with that, exploiting the potential of offshore wind power is associated with building Con Co Island into a tourism and service center and an outpost in the East Sea.
Previously, in a friendly talk with the people living and working on Con Co Island, General Secretary and President To Lam praised the army and people on the island for their solidarity and close coordination in building the outpost island of the Fatherland to become increasingly prosperous in economy and strong in national defense and security.
On this occasion, General Secretary and President To Lam and the delegation laid wreaths and offered incense at Uncle Ho's Memorial House and the Monument to Heroic Martyrs on the heroic Con Co Island.
The General Secretary and President presented gifts to families of people and officers and soldiers living and working on the island, and presented Con Co island district with some essential medical equipment for medical examination and treatment.
