New momentum, new mindset for ASEAN's new development stage

At the invitation of Lao Prime Minister and ASEAN Chair 2024 Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh led a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related Summits in Vientiane, Laos from October 8 to 11.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's attendance at the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related Summits continues to affirm Vietnam's active, proactive and responsible contributions to regional cooperation processes.

On October 9, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the opening ceremony of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related conferences at the National Convention Centre, Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, together with leaders of ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste, attended the plenary session of the ASEAN Summit, discussing cooperation contents within ASEAN and between ASEAN and its partners.

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that, more than ever, ASEAN needs to take self-reliance as the foundation to reach new heights, focus on connectivity to make breakthroughs, and take innovation as the driving force to pioneer and lead.

On that basis, the Prime Minister shared important orientations for ASEAN in the coming time.

Firstly, self-reliance and strategic autonomy are the foundation for ASEAN to stand firm in the face of all fluctuations and overcome all challenges.

Second, promoting internal connectivity combined with external connectivity, public-private connectivity, and multi-sectoral connectivity, focusing on infrastructure, institutional, and human connectivity, is a strategic breakthrough for ASEAN.

Third, innovation is the driving force and main driving force for ASEAN to catch up, progress together and surpass the region and the world. ASEAN needs to promote the human factor as the center, subject, goal, resource and driving force of innovation, and pay attention to enhancing cooperation in education and training of high-quality human resources to meet the requirements of the new era.

The Prime Minister emphasized that ASEAN is preparing for a new development phase with new thinking, new vision, new motivation and new attitude. With the desire to contribute more to regional cooperation, the Prime Minister announced that Vietnam will continue to organize the ASEAN Future Forum in 2025 and hopes that countries will continue to pay attention and support Vietnam to successfully organize this event.

Also on October 9, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and leaders of ASEAN countries attended a dialogue session with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) and ASEAN Youth.

On October 10, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and leaders of ASEAN countries and partners attended the 27th ASEAN-China Summit, the 25th ASEAN-Korea Summit, the 27th ASEAN-Japan Summit, the ASEAN+3 Summit, the ASEAN-Australia Summit, the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the ASEAN-Canada Special Summit.

On October 11, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the ASEAN-US Summit, the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN-United Nations Summit.

At the ASEAN-US Summit, Vietnam proposed that both sides strengthen cooperation to create a prosperous and sustainable future. Accordingly, economic-trade-investment cooperation will be the focus and driving force, which needs to be promoted in an effective, harmonious and sustainable manner, further opening the market for exports and being ready to welcome more investors from the US.

On the occasion of attending the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related Summits, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also had many bilateral meetings with leaders of ASEAN countries and partners attending the conference to discuss many bilateral, regional and global issues.
