Historical order to kick off the nation's long-term resistance war
79 years ago, on December 19, 4, 4, facing a serious threat to national fate, President Ho Chi Minh issued the "Call for National Resistance" (abbreviated as the Call for War), affirming the iron will of the Vietnamese people "preferring to sacrifice everything but definitely not wanting to lose the country, not wanting to be enslaved". This is not only an order of resistance, but also a call for the entire nation to stand up to protect independence and freedom, starting the arduous, arduous but extremely brave resistance war of the Vietnamese people.
Responding to the call of the people, the army and people of Hanoi launched the national resistance war at 20:03 on December 19, 1946 with a series of cannons from Lang Fortress against targets in the city, starting the long-term resistance war.
The National Resistance War Day on December 19, 1946 has entered the history of our nation as an important event, becoming a brilliant symbol of the spirit of patriotism, the heroic spirit of the strength of national unity before the fate of the country.
Over the past 79 years, our country has gone through many historical events, the context has changed a lot, but the historical significance and contemporary stature of the Sacred Appeal to Protect the Fatherland still retain its value, in which there are lessons on arousing, gathering and promoting the strength of the entire people.
Especially the sacred soul of the river and mountain
Continuing the journey of independence, freedom, and the aspiration for peace of the nation, in the period of innovation, industrialization, and modernization of the country, the strength of great national unity and the will and determination to protect the independence need to be promoted to a new level. The 13th National Party Congress affirmed: "Strongly arouse patriotism, national self-reliance, the strength of national great unity and the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country".
That consistent viewpoint is further affirmed by our Party in Resolution No. 43-NQ/TW dated November 24, 2023 of the 8th Central Conference of the 13th tenure, on "Continuing to promote the tradition and strength of great national unity, building our country to be increasingly prosperous and happy".
The Resolution sets out the goal of continuing to promote the tradition and strength of national solidarity, enhancing social consensus, strongly arousing patriotism, national self-reliance, belief, aspiration to contribute and build an increasingly prosperous and happy country; contributing to the successful implementation of the goal of by 2030 Vietnam being a developing country with modern industry and high average income, by 2045 becoming a developed country with high income in the socialist orientation.
On November 12, 2025, in the article "Promoting the strength of great national unity to develop the country", General Secretary To Lam affirmed that the Party always identifies great national unity as a strategic line, an extremely precious tradition, the origin of the strength of the nation, of the revolution, and the decisive factor in all victories in the cause of building, protecting and developing the country.
practice shows that Vietnam's outstanding economic achievements in nearly 40 years of renovation are due to the wise and talented leadership of the Party; the solidarity, unity, and joint efforts of the entire Party, people, and army. Vietnam has become one of the world's leading rice exporters. The economy has grown continuously, the scale of the economy in 2024 has approached the 500 billion USD mark, nearly 100 times higher than in 1986, ranking 4th in Southeast Asia and 34th globally. 79 years have passed, but the spirit of "Appeal for the Whole Land of Resistance" still resounds like the sacred soul of the river and mountains, exuding the strong desire for peace with the ever-ending belief of the Vietnamese people.
