70,000 people in Vietnam die from air pollution each year
Ms. Thu Hien, an office worker in Ho Chi Minh City, complained of fatigue from a prolonged cough and runny nose due to air allergy and fine dust. This situation is not unique but reflects the risk to public health from increasingly serious urban air pollution.
According to data from the global air monitoring system IQAir, at 8:00 a.m. on May 21, the air quality index (AQI) in Hanoi was at 72, in Ho Chi Minh City at 159, respectively ranking 29th and 4th out of 125 most polluted cities globally.

Air pollution in Vietnam is mainly caused by traffic, industry, construction and garbage burning. Breathing polluted air can cause coughs, sore throats, shortness of breath and worsen chronic respiratory diseases. In the long term, the risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer increases. According to the World Health Organization's report in 2024, at least 70,000 people in Vietnam die each year from air pollution, reducing their average life expectancy by about 1.4 years.
