Quynh Lap LNG - New impetus for energy security in the North Central region

Gia Trang |

Quynh Lap LNG power project opens up a driving force for green, modern, and sustainable development for Nghe An and the North Central region in the new stage of the energy industry.

Quynh Lap LNG power plant is one of the key projects of Nghe An province. In the process of implementation, leaders of the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial People's Committee have regularly issued directives and directed direct working sessions with interested investors to promote research progress and investment proposals to remove difficulties for the project as well as strengthen coordination with central ministries and sectors to unify implementation orientations.

With prestige, financial capacity and affirmed experience, the consortium including Vietnam Oil and Gas Power Corporation (PV Power - a member unit of Vietnam National Group of Industry - Energy), SK Innovation and Nghe An Sugar Company Limited (NASU) were selected as project investors. On April 23, 2026, at the Vietnam - Korea Economic Cooperation Forum, under the witness of the Prime Minister of Vietnam and the President of Korea, the Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee awarded the Certificate of Investment Registration for the Quynh Lap LNG project to the consortium of investors.

In that consortium, SK Innovation is a pioneer in the field of energy and chemicals in Korea, standing out with its orientation towards developing green energy and advanced materials. NASU is a reputable enterprise in Nghe An, not only developing circular agriculture but also demonstrating a long-term vision in the energy sector. In particular, PV Power plays a core role with extensive experience in the field of gas power, owning and operating a system of 10 power plants with a total capacity of more than 5,800MW nationwide. PV Power's outstanding highlight is the commercial operation of Nhon Trach 3 and 4 power plants in 2025 - the first LNG power plants of Vietnam, thereby affirming the ability to master LNG technology and creating an important foundation to accompany strategic energy projects such as Quynh Lap LNG.

The project is located in Tan Mai ward, Nghe An province, with a total investment of more than 59 trillion VND, designed capacity of 1,500MW. The project includes a LNG storage system of about 250,000m3, a gas rechemical system and a specialized port serving LNG imports. When put into operation, the plant is expected to supply about 9 billion kWh of electricity per year to the national power system, contributing to ensuring stable power supply for the Northern and North Central regions.

Quynh Lap LNG plant uses new generation mixed cycle gas turbine technology with high efficiency, helping to significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to traditional thermal power plants. This is considered a step in line with the clean energy development orientation in Power Plan VIII as well as Vietnam's commitment to net "0" emissions by 2050. Along with that, the project is expected to create a strong spillover effect on the local socio-economy, promote logistics, seaports, supporting industries and create jobs for thousands of workers.

With its large scale, modern technology and the companionship of experienced and potential investors, the Quynh Lap LNG Power Plant project is not only a key energy project, creating new momentum for energy security in the North Central region, but also a symbol of Vietnam's aspiration for green and sustainable development in the future.

The announcement ceremony of deployment and commencement of technical infrastructure of the Quynh Lap LNG power plant project will take place on May 18, 2026 in Tan Mai ward, Nghe An province.
