Vietnamese businesses race to apply AI
More than a ‘trend’, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an important topic in high-level discussions of the Government in forums. According to the Government AI Readiness Index report compiled and published by Oxford Insights last year, Vietnam ranked 59th out of 193 countries and 9th in East Asia, with a score exceeding the regional average of 51.41. Compared to 2022, Vietnam has increased 19 places in the rankings.
According to McKinsey's Q1/2024 report, up to 65% of Vietnamese enterprises have applied generative AI (AI that can generate ideas) - the technology behind ChatGPT - to their operations and business activities. This figure is nearly double that of 2023 (only 33%). In particular, the fields where enterprises apply generative AI the most include Marketing & Sales (34%), product - service development (23%) and information technology (17%). In 2023 alone, the total amount of money that private enterprises invested in generative AI reached 25.23 billion USD, an increase of nearly 9 times compared to the previous year.
Commenting on the potential for AI development in Vietnam, experts say that our country has many advantages to develop and apply generative AI. In terms of people, Vietnam has a large young population with a high ability to adapt to technology. 84% of Vietnamese people own smartphones and 4G covers 99.8% of the population, creating an abundant source of data, a solid technological foundation for AI development. Moreover, our country's data is indigenous and specific, so there are many problems that only Vietnamese people can exploit.
