Gold price forecast
World gold prices are entering a period of volatility as the market is simultaneously affected by US monetary policy, rising bond yields and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The biggest pressure on the precious metal currently comes from expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) may continue to raise interest rates. The futures contract market is valuing about 66.1% of the Fed's ability to raise interest rates in September, higher than the 57% recorded last weekend. This expectation makes US government bond yields remain high, with 10-year term yields around 4.75%, thereby reducing the attractiveness of non-performing assets such as gold.
Oil price movements are also creating a two-way impact. US-Iran tensions increase around the Hormuz Strait pushing oil prices up, with Brent oil returning above 90 USD/barrel. Geopolitical risks often boost demand for safe-haven assets, creating support for gold. However, strong oil prices are also increasing concerns about inflation, strengthening the Fed's ability to maintain tight monetary policy for longer.
In the short term, the direction of gold may depend significantly on a series of US economic data released this week. The market will successively track JOLTS job opportunities, ISM manufacturing index, ADP private sector jobs report, unemployment claims and especially the August non-farm jobs report. If the labor market continues to show strength, interest rate hikes expectations may be strengthened and put more pressure on gold prices. Conversely, weaker-than-expected data may help gold recover.
Technically, the 4,396 USD/ounce zone is playing a noteworthy supporting role. If this mark is broken, the price is at risk of falling back to 4,341 USD, further to about 4,320 USD/ounce. In the opposite direction, gold needs to surpass the 4,452-4,487 USD zone to improve recovery momentum. If 4,487 USD is conquered, the next targets may be around 4,515 USD and 4,543 USD/ounce.
