Gold price forecast
Gold prices entered a new trading week with strong fluctuations, showing that cautious sentiment is overwhelming the market after a deep decline at the end of last week. Right in the early hours of the session on August 31, world gold prices continuously reversed direction, at times fluctuating more than 30 USD/ounce in a short time.
This development reflects investors' sensitivity to the monetary policy outlook of the US Federal Reserve (Fed). After tough signals on inflation control, expectations that the Fed will maintain a high interest rate level are putting pressure on gold through the rise of the USD and US bond yields.
However, the outlook for the precious metal has not completely turned negative. The latest survey of 21 Wall Street experts shows that 10 people predict gold prices will increase this week, 6 people lean towards the possibility of a decrease and 5 people believe that the market may move sideways.
Some fundamental factors are still supporting gold in the medium and long term. US public debt remains high, debt repayment costs increase, while inflation is still unstable around the 2% target. This puts the Fed in front of a difficult problem between continuing to control prices and limiting the negative impact of high interest rates on economic growth.
In addition, the recent sharp decline appeared after a period of gold increasing rapidly and continuously setting new highs. Therefore, selling pressure may partly come from profit-taking and position adjustment activities instead of confirming that the long-term uptrend has ended.
The focus of this week is a series of US economic data, including ISM manufacturing PMI, JOLTS job opportunity report, ADP private sector employment, number of unemployment claims and PMI service. The most notable is the August non-farm payroll report expected to be released on September 4.
If the labor market shows signs of weakening, expectations that the Fed will continue to tighten policy may cool down, thereby putting pressure on the USD and bond yields, creating conditions for gold to recover. Conversely, positive employment data may put pressure on gold prices to continue.
Technically, the 4,400-4,436 USD/ounce zone is an area to pay attention to. If the buying force is not strong enough to protect this price range, gold is at risk of continuing to adjust. In the context of large fluctuations, domestic investors need to be particularly cautious with high buy-sell spreads, avoid chasing purchases when prices increase rapidly and carefully consider risks before trading.
