World gold prices increased amid a decrease in the USD index. Recorded at 9:10 a.m. on October 19, the US Dollar Index, which measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies, was at 103,300 points (down 0.34%).
Gold prices surged to a new record high on Monday, driven by concerns over escalating geopolitical tensions in several parts of the world and news surrounding the US election, according to commodity analysts at ING.
“Traders are seeking safety in gold after Israel announced that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had been killed,” said commodity strategist Ewa Manthey and director of commodity strategy Warren Patterson.
"Safe-haven demand amid heightened geopolitical risks and headlines ahead of the US election in November has supported gold's record rally this year. We believe the macro picture combined with safe-haven demand amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine will send gold to new highs," said commodity analysts at ING.
Experts believe that the momentum from the US presidential election will continue to push gold prices higher until the end of the year, regardless of which party wins. "Central banks are also expected to continue to increase their holdings, which will be supportive," analysts said.
Given the above factors, Peter Schiff - chief market strategist of Euro Pacific Asset Management - believes that gold prices will increase in the long term.
Also according to Kitco, gold prices broke the all-time high after receiving information that US housing construction activities stabilized in September.
Neils Christensen, an analyst at Kitco News, said the gold market continued to rally, breaking new records, even as the US housing sector showed signs of stabilization.
Housing starts fell 0.5% in September to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.354 million units, down from August's 1.36 million unit rate, the Commerce Department said Friday. The data was roughly in line with expectations.
For the year, the report showed that the pace of US home building fell 0.7% from the September 2023 estimate.
