Gold price forecast
World gold prices are fluctuating around 4,250 USD/ounce as the market balances between the outlook for US monetary policy, the developments of the USD and changes related to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Recent US economic data sends mixed signals. The private sector only created 44,000 jobs in July, a sharp decrease compared to the previous month, showing that recruitment momentum is slowing down. However, the number of initial jobless claims is still below 200,000, while price pressure in the service sector continues to remain high.
This context makes it difficult for the US Federal Reserve (Fed) to balance between the goal of controlling inflation and supporting growth. The possibility of the Fed raising interest rates in September is still being considered by the market, but expectations have decreased compared to the previous week. A fall in US Treasury bond yields may support gold, while a stronger USD continues to put pressure on precious metals.
The 4,250 USD/ounce zone is considered a noteworthy milestone in the short term. If the price remains above this area, the market may continue to focus on signs of weakening of the labor market and the possibility of real yields falling. Conversely, losing the 4,250 USD/ounce mark may increase adjustment pressure, especially when geopolitical risks in the Strait of Hormuz cool down.
The US July non-farm payroll report will be the next important data. Lower-than-forecast jobs and wage data could reduce the Fed's ability to raise interest rates, thereby supporting gold prices. Meanwhile, a more positive than expected report could cause yields and the USD to rise again.
In the medium and long term, UBS believes that gold prospects are still supported by the possibility of falling real interest rates, weakening the USD, capital inflows into ETF funds and central bank buying demand. This organization forecasts that gold prices may reach 5,000 USD/ounce in the first half of 2027.
BCA Research also believes that the most difficult period of the adjustment may have passed. As real yields and the USD no longer increase sharply, the two major drags on gold may gradually turn into supporting factors. However, gold prices are still likely to fluctuate sharply in the face of information about Fed policy, oil prices and geopolitical situation.
