Since the end of 2022, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen (born in 1982, Huu Lung commune, Lang Son province) has continuously faced terrible incidents.
There are 2 sons but her eldest son - Do Nam Khanh (born in 2003), then a second-year student at the Faculty of Chemical Industry, Hanoi University of Industry - suddenly showed symptoms of fatigue and prolonged high fever.
Due to a history of chronic tonsillitis, Khanh subjectively bought fever-reducing medicine to take. However, the disease did not subside but became more and more severe.
When her son's health rapidly declined, Ms. Yen hastily took a bus from Lang Son to Hanoi to take him to the emergency room. At Bach Mai Hospital, Khanh was hospitalized in critical condition and fell into a coma for three days.
Doctors diagnosed Khanh with end-stage chronic kidney failure, which progressed rapidly due to not being detected early, along with a history of overusing fever-reducing drugs.
The serious illness has brought the future of the young man with many dreams of studying and starting a career to the end. After that, Khanh had to undergo a month of treatment for sepsis combined with continuous blood filtration to maintain his life.
In January 2023, Khanh underwent shoulder surgery to perform an artificial kidney surgery. However, the surgery was unsuccessful. Transferred to Viet Duc Hospital, the doctors had to perform many complex procedures to help the surgery bring positive results.
After a period of treatment here, Khanh continued to go to Lang Son General Hospital for treatment and had to have a periodic blood filter in the locality.
Realizing that the patient was too young, the doctors advised the family to consider a kidney transplant so that Khanh could return to normal life.
This decision made Ms. Yen and her family extremely worried. Because she was willing to donate one kidney to her child even though she knew her health would be affected. However, the test results showed that her kidneys were not compatible, and she had thyroid disease. Hopefully, the hope of a kidney transplant from a relative is closed, but the cost of buying kidneys from outside is beyond the family's ability.
On October 21, tragedy continued to fall on Ms. Yen's family when her husband, Mr. Do Canh Tinh (born in 1976), also the family's economic pillar, unfortunately fell while walking, hitting his head on the ground in critical condition.
Due to difficult roads in mountainous areas, when Mr. Tinh was taken to Viet Duc Hospital, it was too late for surgery, because the risk of death right on the operating table was very high.
In that situation, the doctors suggested a kidney test for Mr. Tinh to transplant to Khanh. The results brought a rare ray of hope when the compatible level reached 100%.
During her days on duty at the hospital, witnessing many patients unable to wait for their organs to be transplanted and leaving, Ms. Yen made a kind decision to donate her husband's other tissues and organs to save strangers.
On October 31, Mr. Do Canh Tinh breathed his last. That same evening, Khanh's kidney transplant was performed. At the same time, according to the family's wishes, Mr. Tinh's heart, liver and the remaining kidney were also donated to other patients. The transplants were all successful, bringing a new life to many people.
After 15 days since the time of the kidney transplant, Khanh's health gradually stabilized. But the joy of revival comes with a huge financial burden. Although the kidney transplant is free, the total cost of treatment from 2022 to present has exceeded 1 billion VND.
Ms. Yen had to borrow more than 400 million VND from the bank, the rest was borrowed from relatives and could not afford to pay. After the transplant, Khanh still needs to use long-term special medicine at high costs.
According to information from the Department of Social Work, Viet Duc Hospital, patient Do Nam Khanh (born in 2003) still has to be treated with long-term medication, while his family is in a particularly difficult situation, requiring attention and support from the community.
