We visited a small temporary house on a relative's land in Tan Quoi Trung commune, Vung Liem district, Vinh Long province. Unable to resist the emotions of Le Minh Luan's skinny face (26 years old) after a long period of struggling with end-stage kidney failure.
The young man Le Minh Luan said that he used to work in Ho Chi Minh City, but after the Lunar New Year 2025, he suddenly fell in the restroom and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment and discovered to have end-stage chronic kidney failure.
Up to now, every 6 hours, he has to dialysis himself through the abdominal wall, a process of fatigue and pain while the body is exhausted due to chronic anemia and dyslipidemia.
"I just hope to get treatment soon so I can go to work and earn money to give to my mother. My father passed away when I was young, my mother sacrificed her whole life for me, I want to take care of my mother for the remaining years, Luan whispered as he shared his biggest dream.
Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Qui (born in 1957), Luan's mother, said that although Luan has health insurance, he is not covered by 100%. I regularly go to Ho Chi Minh City once a month to buy materials and kidney filtering solutions combined with travel costs of more than 5 million VND per trip.
According to Ms. Qui, to take care of her son who was hospitalized for two months, she had to borrow money from everywhere and sell all her assets, including her flock of eel raised for profit to make a living, and died without care, causing hundreds of millions of dong in damage.
Knowing the difficult circumstances of Mrs. Qui and her children, many neighbors have come to share. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, who lives a few houses away, said that when she saw Luan being so sick, the people in the village saved a little money, some gave him rice, some gave him fish, pieces of meat... so that Mrs. Qui could cook for her son.
"It's very expensive, but we're poor, unable to help long-term or worry about the cost of re-examination every month. Those gestures, although small, are a great spiritual support for Mrs. Qui and Luan in the midst of the crisis," Ms. Hai added.
Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuc - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tan Quoi Trung commune said that the commune currently has 04 poor households and 75 near-poor households. Le Minh Luan's family is currently a particularly difficult family case.
In the past, the locality has prioritized gifts and support from benefactors to help Luan's family reduce difficulties.
Currently, the commune has proposed to consider Le Minh Luan's situation to receive a monthly allowance, so that his family can have the cost to continue treating Luan.
"We hope that organizations and individuals with good hearts will continue to join hands to help, so that Luan has the opportunity to receive long-term treatment and overcome adversity. Because in the journey of kindness, no one should be left behind, especially a young man who is still determined to fight for his daily life in a house built on the land of a relative," Mr. Phuc added.
