On the hospital bed at People's Hospital 115 (Ho Chi Minh City), Dang Hoang Phuc Loc (born in 2007, An Binh commune) was still sometimes in a coma and sometimes awake, unable to say a word; in the hallway, Ms. Dang Thi Hong Van (born in 1981) quietly sat waiting for her child to wake up, her eyes filled with worry.
According to Ms. Van, the traffic accident happened on January 22, when Loc was on his way to work in Ho Chi Minh City. From that moment, all plans of the 19-year-old young man suddenly became unfinished.
Before the accident, Loc was studying electrical - refrigeration industry in Ho Chi Minh City, both studying and working, receiving company support of about 5 million VND per month, with the desire to soon have skills and a stable income to help his difficult family.
Ms. Van said that since being hospitalized, her son has been paralyzed and unable to talk. The family lives in constant worry, both worried about his health and burdened with treatment costs.
According to the medical record, Loc suffered severe multiple injuries, pelvic fracture, femur fracture, and serious bladder injury. Doctors said that the treatment process will be long, requiring many surgeries to have hope of walking again.
Sharing in tears, Ms. Van said that her son's bladder was very severely damaged and had to be intervened many times. "I heard that I still have to have surgery, but I don't know where to get money," Ms. Van choked up.
Loc's family was originally in difficult circumstances. Ms. Van did not have a stable job, she did whatever she was hired to do, maybe earning about 200,000 VND per day; and had to take care of her 72-year-old biological mother who was chronically ill, making life even more exhausted.
Since Loc was hospitalized, the treatment cost has exceeded 50 million VND, while there are still many expensive surgeries ahead. The family has to borrow money from relatives and neighbors to pay hospital fees in the immediate future," Ms. Van added.
Neighbors also joined hands to help. Ms. Bay Lan, who lives near Loc's house, said that her family was already in difficulty, so when the accident happened, everyone felt sorry.
In the early days of Loc's hospitalization, people in the neighborhood collected a little to help the family cover the hospital fees. Help as much as there is, hoping that he will get through this situation," Ms. Lan said.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phong - Head of An Thoi hamlet, An Binh commune said that Loc's family went from a poor household, escaped poverty and then near-poverty not long after the accident occurred.
Mr. Phong assessed that the incident continued to put the family in difficulty. "The locality is preparing documents to consider monthly social allowances for Loc," Mr. Phong informed.
According to Mr. Phong, the support aims to help the family reduce pressure during the prolonged treatment period. "The accident pushed the family that had just escaped near-poverty back to the brink of hardship. Amidst physical pain and the burden of expenses, each sharing at this time is a ray of hope for Phuc Loc to have the opportunity to stand up and continue life," Mr. Phong added.
