In the middle of heavy rain, we came to the dilapidated house of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam's family in Thanh Tri commune, Vinh Long province. The corrugated iron roof was rotten, many places leaked everywhere, inside there were only a few simple items. The house could collapse at any time if it rained heavily.
Before the disease struck, Mr. Lam was the main breadwinner, working hard every day to support his wife and young daughter Nguyen Thi Ngoc Quyen who was preparing to enter 6th grade. Ms. Le Thi Thanh Tien - Mr. Lam's wife - works as a seasonal worker, her job is precarious, and her income is just enough to cover essential expenses.
Life, which was already struggling, became even more desperate when in March 2026, Mr. Lam was diagnosed with a malignant tumor at the father's house, accompanied by many dangerous underlying diseases. To regain his life, he was prescribed surgery to remove the duodenal tumor - a complex surgery, leading to many costs that the poor family could not afford on their own.
After the surgery, Mr. Lam's health deteriorated a lot and he was no longer able to work. He choked up: "I just hope the disease will subside so that I can go to work to support my wife and children. Now I have to worry about treatment money every month, I am very worried.
Feeling sorry for her husband, Ms. Tien ran around borrowing money, gathering 85 million VND to cover the surgery. The debt had not been fully paid, Mr. Lam continued to re-examine and receive monthly chemotherapy, causing the family's burden to become increasingly heavy.
“Sometimes I don't know where to borrow anymore. Surgery costs, medicine costs, hospital costs incurred. Each month I need 1.5 million VND for treatment. My child is preparing for 6th grade, I'm just afraid I won't be able to take care of my husband and young child.”
As a neighbor living near Mr. Lam's family, Mr. Thanh Tan said that Mr. Lam was originally hardworking and worked as a hired laborer all year round to raise his children. Since contracting the disease, he no longer has the strength to work, and his family's life has become even more difficult.
The family has had difficulties for a long time, but before, when Mr. Lam was healthy, he still went to work, trying to take care of his wife and children. Now he is seriously ill, and the house is dilapidated and damaged without money to repair it," Mr. Tan shared.
Ms. Ho Que Chi - Chairwoman of the Thanh Tri Commune Red Cross Society - confirmed that Mr. Lam's family is in particularly difficult circumstances, falling into poverty due to a serious illness. The locality will prioritize mobilizing socialized sources to support the family to overcome the difficult period.
Mr. Lam's family is struggling with illness, debt and a dilapidated house. Sharing at this time not only helps them ease the burden, but also adds hope for the poor father to be treated and be with his wife and children.
