LD26195: Kidney failure for more than 3 years, Vinh Long male student yearns to return to school to find a future

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - Stage 5 kidney failure, Luong Huynh Duc has to drop out of school, undergo kidney dialysis 3 times a week, the family is exhausted hoping he will recover.

We came to the situation of Luong Huynh Duc (born in 2009, residing in Phu hamlet, Dai Dien commune, Vinh Long province) when he had been fighting kidney failure for more than 3 years. The terrible disease caused the school-age student to drop out of school, life associated with dialysis sessions to maintain life.

According to the treatment records at Minh Duc General Hospital, Duc was diagnosed with stage 5 chronic kidney failure, dependent on hemodialysis and had to be treated 3 times a week.

Ms. Huynh Thi My Dung, Duc's mother, said that her child developed the disease in 2023, then had to drop out of school for treatment. Currently, the cost of dialysis is about 1 million VND/month for 12 times, not including travel expenses. Duc has to have tests every 3 months, costing an additional 3 million VND. Continuous expenses become a burden when the family has no stable income.

There are no people in the family who make money, while there are expenses every day. I have to quit my job to take my child to the hospital, and my husband has been mentally ill for many years, so he cannot work," Ms. Dung choked up.

The family is considered a near-poor household, 5 people, without land, only living in the house of her parents-in-law. Ms. Dung's mother-in-law is over 80 years old, often sick, so life is even more difficult.

What Ms. Dung is concerned about is the opportunity to transplant a kidney for her child. According to the doctor, if there is a suitable relative to donate a kidney, the transplant cost is about 500 - 600 million VND. "The family is still worried about each meal, so how dare they think about transplanting a kidney. I just hope to have conditions for my child to be healthy and return to normal life," Ms. Dung said.

Sitting silently beside his mother, Duc choked up looking into the distance. He said that his biggest wish at this time is to have the health to return to school. The boy hopes that in the future he can learn a profession, find a stable job to take care of himself and help his parents in their old age.

I just hope to get well again to continue going to school. Later I want to have a stable job to take care of my parents," Duc shared.

Ms. Sau Mai, a neighbor of Duc, said that his family was already difficult, now it is becoming even more difficult when his father has been sick for many years, and then his son is also seriously ill. The mother has to take on everything, while the old woman over 80 years old is also often sick.

The family is really pitiful. Difficulties follow difficulties. The father has been sick for many years, and then the child is also sick, all the burden falls on the mother," Ms. Sau Mai said.

Neighbors also try to share with the family with portions of rice, food or a little gift on holidays and Tet. However, Duc's treatment costs are too high, so people cannot provide much support.

Ms. Huynh Nhu - Chairwoman of the Red Cross Society of Dai Dien commune, said that when Duc first became ill, the school where he studied once mobilized donations to support his family. Currently, the locality also prioritizes for his family to receive gifts from benefactors near and far.

Duc is still too young, if he is supported with treatment, he will have more opportunities to maintain his health, continue his studies and have a stable career. The locality really hopes that philanthropists will care and share so that he can have funds for dialysis, and even have more opportunities for kidney transplants," Ms. Huynh Nhu shared.
