We came to the house of Mrs. Ho Thi Ly (71 years old, residing in Vinh Duc Tay hamlet, Ba Tri commune, Vinh Long province) when it was already evening. The house was temporarily degraded, the walls were mottled, the floor was damp, and the air smelled strongly of medicine. In a cramped room, Mrs. Ly lay motionless on the bed, next to her was her daughter taking care of her day and night.
Old age, depleted health, Ms. Ly is being treated for many diseases at the same time, including unpredictable neoplasms, malignant tumors in the breast, urinary tract infections, cerebral edema, hypokalemia and gastroesophageal reflux.
Talking to reporters, Ms. Ly said that what makes her pain is not only the illness but also the fact that her family no longer has the ability to cover treatment costs. Each re-examination, medicine and arising living expenses make the family's meager money quickly run out.
According to Ms. Ly, the family currently has 3 people. The only daughter is no longer living with her husband, having to raise her 11-year-old son alone. Now Ms. Ly is seriously ill, lying in one place, the daughter has to quit her job to stay home to take care of her mother, meaning the family has almost no income.
Now I just hope someone can help to continue treatment. I feel sorry for my children and grandchildren because my children have to quit their jobs to take care of their elderly grandmother," Ms. Ly choked up.
The house she is living in has also deteriorated for a long time. Bricks, roofs and many items have been damaged but there is no money to repair them. The girl used to work as a hired laborer, doing whatever anyone hires, her income is only enough to make ends meet.
Ms. Hanh, a neighbor, said that Ms. Ly's family was originally single, and life has been difficult for many years. Since she fell ill, people around her have helped with whatever they have, sometimes with little money, sometimes with rice, food or partially supporting travel expenses, but the help of neighbors is also limited.
Seeing her sick and lying in one place, her daughter having to quit her job to take care of her mother, neighbors felt sorry for her and tried to help, but everyone was in difficulty, so they could only provide some support," Ms. Hanh shared.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thien Hoa - Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Ba Tri commune, Ms. Ho Thi Ly's family is considered a near-poor household and is falling into a particularly difficult situation. Faced with the increasingly declining health, the locality hopes to have more resources to help her have conditions to continue treatment.
Ms. Ly's circumstances are very difficult, the family no longer has the ability to cover long-term treatment costs. We hope organizations, individuals, and philanthropists will pay attention to support so that she has more opportunities to be cured," Mr. Hoa added.
