LD26170: Cancer wife raises disabled husband and grandchild in dilapidated house

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - Breast cancer has exhausted a poor woman in Thanh Tri commune, 3 people living precariously in a dilapidated house.

At the end of a small road in Binh Thanh 3 hamlet, Thanh Tri commune, Vinh Long province is a house with rotten walls. Three people living precariously in that roof, facing illness, poverty and a bleak future every day.

Ms. Dinh Thi Trang (born in 1978) is the pillar of the family. Her husband has leg disabilities and is unable to work. The grandchild born in 2019 has lived with her grandparents since childhood because her parents were poor and went to work away for many years, not having enough conditions to take care of them.

The family has no land, no stable job. Previously, Ms. Trang worked as a hired laborer with all kinds of jobs to support her husband and grandchildren. The meager income was just enough rice to eat every day, and the family has never had savings in case of illness.

In December 2025, after many days of pain, Ms. Trang went to the hospital for examination and was diagnosed with malignant breast cancer, accompanied by type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. After surgery, her health seriously declined.

Since the onset of the disease, every month she has to go to the hospital for re-examination, IV fluids and treatment many times. Money for medicine, money for transportation, and food and accommodation all have to be borrowed. The debt is increasing day by day, and her health is gradually weakening with each chemotherapy course.

I just hope I still have enough strength to take care of my husband and raise my grandchild to adulthood. Sometimes the rice in the house runs out, looking at my grandchild, I can't hold back my tears. The illness came unexpectedly, now I don't know where to cling to," Ms. Trang choked up.

The thin woman said that what worries her the most is the future of her grandchild. If she no longer has the strength to fight the disease, the child will lack support, while her parents will still make a living far from home with an extremely precarious life.

As a neighbor for many years, Mrs. Sau Hai said that Mrs. Trang's family is in difficult circumstances in the hamlet. The whole family only relies on Mrs. Trang's labor, so since she got sick, life has almost fallen into a deadlock.

In the past, Ms. Trang used to work as a hired laborer to earn money to buy rice. Now she is seriously ill, her husband is disabled, and her grandchild is still young. Neighbors give each other whatever they have, but the people here are also poor, so they help whenever they can," Ms. Sau Hai said.

Ms. Ho Que Chi - Chairwoman of the Thanh Tri Commune Red Cross Society - said that the locality currently has 112 poor households, nearly 95 near-poor households and 84 difficult households that need to be cared for and supported regularly.

According to Ms. Chi, Ms. Dinh Thi Trang's family is one of the particularly difficult cases in the commune. Since she discovered a serious illness, the locality has always prioritized giving gifts from philanthropists, and at the same time continued to mobilize resources to help the family overcome the challenging period.
