On September 18, female singer Rosé (Blackpink) released her new song "New trick" on digital music platforms along with a MV on YouTube.
This is a collaborative product between the female singer and Apple in the "Shot on iPhone" campaign, continuing a series of projects that have featured many international artists such as Lady Gaga, Olivia Rodrigo and The Weeknd.
New trick" has garage punk and pop-rock sounds, with prominent electric guitar and fast, liberal and vibrant tempo. Compared to the emotional depth songs in the debut album "Rosie" released in 2024, the new product brings a brighter, stronger and more mischievous nuance.
The song was co-written by Rosé with Amy Allen, the female musician who collaborated with her in the hit "APT.".
Andrew Wells - who participated in the production of "Stay a little longer" - also participated in the process of making "New trick".
The content of the song revolves around the wounds and challenges in love, but instead of sinking into feelings of sadness, the female character chooses to face everything in her own way. True to its name, the song conveys the mindset of seeking a "new trick" to continue moving forward.
Rosé described this as one of the "most cute" products she and Amy Allen have ever made together.
According to Rosé, the song was born at a time when she wanted to escape the sad songs that accounted for most of her previous solo compositions. "New trick" therefore expresses a different perspective, both sweet and a bit mischievous and bold.
The MV is directed by Dave Meyers. He has been behind many famous music products of Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Ariana Grande.
Different from the quiet image often seen in narrative songs, the MV "New trick" exploits outdoor space, fast scene transitions and youthful energy.
Notably, the entire MV was filmed with iPhone 18 Pro. Images imbued with the atmosphere of teen movies, with costumes inspired by school uniforms, a classic-style red car and a purple lollipop. Rosé also appeared with a band in the gym.
Sunny suburban scenes, youthful fashion style and flexible camera movement make the MV evoke teen movies from the early 2000s, but are recreated through the lens of contemporary pop music.
The use of iPhone 18 Pro is also aimed at introducing a new camera system on the device, including the aperture adjustment feature. This filming method helps the MV maintain a youthful, dynamic image quality, while emphasizing the spirit of creativity with mobile devices that the "Shot on iPhone" campaign aims for.
With "New trick", Rosé continues to expand her musical color after the album "Rosie", while combining song release activities with a global technology promotion campaign.
