Episode 6 "Extreme" of the documentary series "Planet Earth III" produced by BBC (UK) has an introduction to Vietnam's Son Doong Cave that has just received 2 prestigious Emmy Award nominations.
Airing in late 2023, "Planet Earth III", episode 6: "Extreme" takes viewers to the most remote and inhospitable lands on the planet - from high mountain peaks to hot deserts, from the polar regions cold to deep underground caves.
Sharing on the BBC website , producer and director Theo Webb said that the scene about Son Doong cave is one of the most impressive segments of the episode. He shared: "This is the most extraordinary place I have ever been to. Living underground for 18 days to film was a huge privilege."
To capture the great beauty of the cave, the film crew used a unique "dual drone dance" technique: a large drone is used for lighting, while a smaller drone flies around to film. Thanks to that, they were able to record unprecedented images of Son Doong.
"With dancing drone-like movements, we were able to show the cave in a way that had never been filmed before. Sunbeams poured in through a hole in the cave roof - it was truly a impressive moment and something I will never forget," Webb said.
In addition to breathtaking footage of the cave structure, the film crew also captured rare images of blind fish and shrimp living in small puddles inside the cave.
The IMDB page describes the episode as an "enchanting journey" and notes: "Audiences can look forward to a riveting exploration of some of the world's most extraordinary creatures, told through dramatic stories." exciting, suspenseful, funny and sometimes heartbreaking".
Besides Son Doong, the episode also introduces many other impressive scenes about the miraculous adaptation of animals in harsh environments: From the Arctic wolf pack on Ellesmere Island (Canada), to the European frogs. Europe in the snowy Alps, or a flock of rare parrots in Queensland (Australia)...
In particular, the episode also addresses the impact of climate change. According to director Webb: "We see beautiful but fragile monarch butterflies struggling to survive the Mexican winter due to increasingly fierce storms. We witness the tragic death of an elephant offspring as its mother struggles to feed herself and her family in an environment plagued by drought and overgrazing."
However, the film crew also brought a message of hope through rare footage of a snow leopard family in the Gobi Desert (Mongolia). Discovery Wildlife emphasized: "This is a reminder that there is still hope out there."
With beautiful images and a compelling story, the "Extreme" episode of Planet Earth III not only gives audiences exciting experiences about the natural world, but also serves as a warning about the fragility of nature. ecosystems in the face of changes in the global environment.
Thanks to that, this episode received 2 nominations in the categories "Outstanding Cinematography for a Non-Fiction Program" and "Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary" at this year's prestigious Emmy Awards.
