Expectations for Vietnamese cinema to reach further
On March 15, the Vietnam Cinema Association held a ceremony to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of Vietnamese Revolutionary Cinema Day (March 15, 1953 - March 15, 2026). The event is an opportunity to review the development journey of Vietnamese cinema, and at the same time opens up many expectations for the upcoming journey.
Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, director Luk Van said that Vietnamese cinema is showing many positive signs as more and more young filmmakers and many new projects are being launched. However, she hopes that in the near future, more diverse film genres will appear in the market to meet the increasingly diverse needs of audiences.
The female director said that Vietnamese cinema needs to expand cooperation with international film studios. The combination of production not only helps improve technical quality but also opens up opportunities to bring Vietnamese films to foreign markets.
Sharing this view, director Le Thanh Son said that the most important thing is that filmmakers need to dare to tell stories imbued with Vietnamese identity, but expressed in modern cinematic language.
According to him, when the film is made in a decent and sincere way, the audience will feel the value of the work.
I believe that when we tell very Vietnamese stories, but with a modern approach, Vietnamese cinema is not only supported by domestic audiences but can also go further on the world film map," said director Le Thanh Son.
Artist Quyen Linh - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Cinema Association also commented that Vietnamese cinema is entering a period of vibrant development. According to him, if in the past audiences often expected international blockbusters, now Vietnamese films have gradually gained public attention.
In 2026 alone, the market recorded about 100 film projects being and about to be produced. The increase in the number of projects shows that the domestic film industry is expanding, while creating opportunities for filmmakers to accumulate experience and improve their skills.
Difficulties to be removed
Besides the positive signs, artists also frankly acknowledge many challenges that Vietnamese cinema is facing.
According to director Luk Van, one of the biggest difficulties today is financial investment. To make a quality film, production costs are often very large. However, not every project has enough resources to invest properly.
Artist Quyen Linh said that the difficulty is not only in production but also in promotion. According to him, many elaborately invested films are not widely known to audiences when released in theaters due to lack of resources for media.
There are filmmakers who put a lot of heart into it, but when the film goes to theaters, few people know about it. That makes them very disappointed. Promotion to bring the film to the public is an extremely important factor," artist Quyen Linh shared.
According to the male artist, another weakness of Vietnamese cinema is that scripts have not had many breakthroughs. Many films still repeat familiar motifs, lacking new stories to attract audiences.
To overcome this, artist Quyen Linh informed that filmmakers need to invest more in script development. When there is a good script, character building, actor selection and production deployment will be more convenient.
From the perspective of artists, Vietnamese cinema is facing many opportunities but also many challenges. When filmmakers focus more on scripts, production investment and promotion strategies, Vietnamese cinema can completely step by step affirm its position and aim to reach out to the international market.
