From a boy from the river region of Ca Mau who used to sing in the late-night ferry wharf, Lam Hung today has become a familiar lyrical voice to a large audience. His path to music is not paved with roses, but built with passion, willpower and gratitude for his homeland and family.
The male singer recounted that his love for singing came to him from a simple memory more than thirty years ago, during a trip to attend his second sister's wedding. At that time, traveling from Ca Mau to Nam Can still had to be by boat, the two mothers and daughters slept temporarily on the beach. During the night, he randomly sang the song "Tình đẹp mùa chôm chôm" for the surrounding people to listen to. Suddenly, everyone applauded and praised, even pitying the two mothers and daughters for lending them a mat to sleep until morning. "That memory I will always remember, because it was the first time I saw myself welcomed by the audience," he shared. That simple encouragement sowed in him the belief to pursue the path of art.
Born into a family with a tradition of working as a boatman, Lam Hung was once prevented from singing by his family and forced to continue his boat driving career, becoming a captain. In the early days, when he learned that his son was singing for a troupe in his hometown, his mother strongly opposed it. "The family raised pigs, with a knife used to cut bananas, my mother used a knife to cut my suitcase in half," he recalled.
The family economic upheaval later became the motivation that made him determined to switch directions. Before going to Ho Chi Minh City to start a career, he promised his mother: if after three years he is not successful, he will return to his hometown to continue driving a train. Carrying that promise, Lam Hung went to the city alone to find opportunities.
An important predestined relationship came when he was introduced to meet the late artist Vu Linh. After listening to him try singing, artist Vu Linh accepted him into the troupe, creating conditions for him to go to school and perform. From that initial step, Lam Hung continued to meet many musicians and teachers in the profession such as Vinh Thuyen, Thai Hung, Nguyen Nhat Huy, Hoai An... These professional relationships have contributed to shaping his musical path. "Where you go is not important, who you go with is important," the male singer concluded.
True to his promise to his mother, after only three years, the name Lam Hung began to be widely known to the audience. His debut song "Nguoi la niem dau" - a song he wrote Chinese music with Vietnamese lyrics - became a memorable milestone. After that, a series of songs such as "Nghĩa mẹ", "Mỗi người một quá khứ", "Chuyện tình mùa đông"... continued to help him affirm his position in the lyrical music genre.
Mentioning Tet, Lam Hung could not hide his emotions. The song "New Year's Eve remembering mother" was composed by him after his mother passed away, containing many personal feelings. Meanwhile, "Spring away from home" was born from the image of workers carrying each other on motorbikes to their hometowns for Tet, making him clearly feel the sacredness of Vietnamese Tet. For the male singer, Tet performances on Vinh Long Television Station are also special memories, where he clearly feels the warmth of the Western audience.
Stepping into 2026, Lam Hung said he will continue to hold private liveshows and launch more music products on digital platforms. He also revealed his desire for his children to follow in his footsteps and plans to make the first MVs for his children in the near future, hoping to receive the support of the audience.
