It has been 30 years since Vietnamese national anthem author - musician Van Cao left the world temporarily, he passed away on July 10, 1995.

80 years of the National Anthem

2025 marks a special time for great historical events of the nation, the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South - National Reunification Day, and in the near future, the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution, the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

80 years ago, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in the historic Ba Dinh Square, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, opening a new history of the nation. In the special moment of National Day, September 2, 1945, the song Tien Quan Ca (songwriter Van Cao) was performed.

The melody of the song Tien Quan ca spans 80 years accompanying the nation and the Fatherland in the most important events, in the most special moments, in the most glorious moments.

Even for each individual, when singing the Army song, listening to the Army song always brings special emotions, associated with special moments.

In a conversation with Lao Dong reporter, athlete who won Gold Medals at 5 consecutive SEA Games Dinh Phuong Thanh shared that many athletes who won medals often burst into tears when hearing the National Anthem.

"The moment we win medals, we often mix up a lot of emotions, at that time, not everyone bursts into tears. But, when the national anthem is played, almost no athlete can control it, will burst into tears looking at the national flag and singing along to the national anthem" - Dinh Phuong Thanh said.

The national anthem is a symbol of national spirit and national pride, so anyone who steps out into the world is moved when the national anthem is played. It was a meaningful moment for anyone.

Singer Tung Duong asked permission from musician Van Cao's family to record a separate version of the national anthem. Tung Duong said: "Each person loves the National Anthem in their own way and for their own reason. For me, I love and cherish the historical mark in the song "Marching Song". The spirit of the song exudes from the melody and lyrics, always full of emotions, anyone who listens can feel heroism and emotion. During major national holidays, such as National Day, the National Anthem will be played everywhere. I hope that after me, there will be many people singing national anthems, recording national anthems, so that the national anthems can resound with many different emotions, different personal impressions".

Regarding the son of author Van Cao, painter Van Thao, he said that he had great pride in his father, and was moved when his father's works were loved by audiences through many generations.

Talking to Lao Dong reporter, artist Van Thao shared: The song M along with the army has accompanied the people through many events throughout the great and lasting war of national defense until now.

Before his death, my father told my family to donate this song to the State and the people when they had the opportunity. After that, my family was able to follow my father's wishes.

That is the honor of not only our family but also the people. Only the people can preserve the National Anthem forever, resounding until now".

30 years of musician Van Cao's temporary departure (July 10, 1995 - July 10, 2025)

Musician Van Cao's birth name is Nguyen Van Cao, he was born in 1923, and died on July 10. 1995, exactly 30 years ago. He is the symbol of a genius in many fields, from music, poetry to painting.

During his lifetime, musician Van Cao was the most influential person in Vietnamese modern music. He is considered by experts and music lovers as one of the three most outstanding musicians of the 20th century Vietnamese music industry, along with Pham Duy and Trinh Cong Son.

Belonging to the pioneering generation of neo-music musicians, Van Cao joined the Dong Vong group, composing romantic lyrical songs, most notably Ben Xuan, Suoi Am, Thien Thai and Truong Chi... With resistance music, musician Van Cao has outstanding compositions such as Lang Ta, Tien Quan Ca, Truong Ca Song Lo, Tien ve Ha Noi, Muoi Xuan Nhat...

With the song "M along the way", since the end of 1944 musician Van Cao composed for many days at the house at 171 Mongrant Street (now Nguyen Thuong Hien Street) and named the work "M along the way". "Marching Song" was printed on the art page of Doc Lap newspaper in November 1944

"Marching Song" rang out on the morning of September 2, 1945 at Ba Dinh Square. The 1946 Constitution clearly states in Article 3: Quoc ca is the Marching Song.

After the August Revolution in 1945, musician Van Cao had a period of time as a performance artist for Lao Dong newspaper.
