Chinese actor causes backlash when complaining about poverty

Recently, the reality show "Entertainment and their managers" attracted attention when Chinese actor Luo Zheng revealed his bank account balance.

He said that the total assets after 10 years of artistic activities are only about 4,800 CNY (about more than 18 million VND).

The actor recounted that he was once sued by his former management company for 50 million CNY in compensation for termination of the contract. After negotiation, he had to compensate more than 3 million CNY and only paid off the debt in early 2024.

La Chinh also filmed a scene of a empty refrigerator, a living room only about two arm spans wide, traveling by public bicycle and claiming to be "the poorest artist in Cbiz".

After this sharing, in just one week, La Chinh's Douyin account increased by more than 600,000 followers and quickly reached 1 million followers; the number of livestream viewers exceeded 100,000, and brands continuously gave gifts during broadcasts.

However, as the story spread, netizens discovered that court enforcement records showed that the old company had requested to freeze 19.01 million CNY in La Chinh's bank account. This created a major contrast to the affirmation that he only had more than 4,800 CNY left, causing public suspicion and controversy.

After that, La Chinh publicly disclosed the bank statements to explain. He said that the figure of 19.01 million CNY was only the compensation level that the old company requested, and at the time of judgment enforcement in 2023, the actual balance in his account was only more than 13,000 CNY, completely without the tens of millions of yuan as many people speculated.

However, the doubts in public opinion still cannot be dispelled. Netizens' comments no longer only revolve around the lawsuit, but many people think that La Chinh once again uses the trick of "crying poverty, selling hardship" to promote himself.

Some people also summarize La Chinh's "communication formula": first, giving attention-grabbing details "only 4,800 CNY in the account" in a TV show, then cutting it into short videos circulating online to evoke sympathy, and then when popularity increases, immediately opening livestream sales sessions. The entire process is said to be almost identical to the "selling hard to make money" model that is very familiar.

Whether this is La Chinh's intention or not, this "complaining about poverty" scene is still seen by public opinion as a media trick.

What prompted netizens to quickly draw such a conclusion is because this is not the first time this type of promotion has appeared. Before La Chinh, there were many Chinese artists who faced fierce reactions because of similar strategies.

According to the media, in fact, it is not difficult to understand why many artists want to use the trick of "complaining about poverty" to promote themselves. The core purpose is to create empathy with the public. Such content is also easily prioritized by social networking platforms, thereby converting it into traffic for sales livestreams.

Especially, in the past 2 years, when the resources of the Chinese entertainment industry have shrunk, mid-range artists need to create topics to attract attention, causing similar cases to become more and more numerous.

However, to date, it can be seen that this strategy is only "beautiful in theory". The biggest problem is that in the age of transparent information, celebrities are very easily "exposed".

The Internet keeps almost all of their traces. If the image in front of the camera does not match what they have shared on social networks or appearances in real life, the public can easily think that they are deceiving, making the risk of reputation even higher.

Moreover, this also increases the gap in awareness between celebrities and the public. Many people believe that the so-called "poverty" of artists is actually just a concern that they are no longer able to maintain villas, branded goods or expensive education for their children. This is also the reason why the scenes of artists "complaining about poverty" often cause negative reactions.
