Yonhap said Netflix plans to release seven Korean films by 2025 to meet the changing content consumption trends of audiences as movie watching is no longer limited to traditional cinemas.
Along with that, recently, projects of this platform have failed due to unattractive content and acting despite huge investment and famous actors. Among them is the 70 billion won invested film - "Gyeongseong Creature" starring Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee, so it needs to "pull back" its performance.
According to Kim Tae Won - Director of Content and Business Group at Netflix Korea, the company prioritizes "improving quality and expanding diversity" when choosing films for next year.
Ranging from action thrillers to romantic comedies, the animation promises to bring "fun to everyone" through "unique storytelling."
Among the 7 films, "Revelations" by director Yeon Sang Ho (famous for Train to Busan, Sentence from Hell, Parasite: Gray Zone) starring Ryu Jun Yeol and Shin Hyun Bin is the most anticipated.
The film is adapted from the webtoon by author Choi Gyu Seok, about pastor Min Chan (Ryu Jun Yeol) who believes he has a sacred mission to punish the perpetrator of a missing person case.
Meanwhile, police investigator Yeon Hee (Shin Hye Bin) is haunted by the image of her deceased sister - the victim of a tragic crime in the past.
"I approached this film differently than my previous work with Netflix," the director shared. "I wanted to create a film that used minimal computer graphics. I wondered how audiences would react to the purely cinematic filmmaking style and how they would experience such a film on a smartphone."
Meanwhile, Kim Byung Woo - the famous director of the movie "90 Minutes of Horror" is currently making the sci-fi action movie "The Great Flood" with the participation of Kim Da Mi and Park Hae Soo.
Speaking about the changing movie-watching habits of audiences, the director shared: "One of the things that worries me the most is that viewers now have the remote control in their hands. Unlike in a cinema, they have complete control.
I was thinking about how to keep the story engaging in these circumstances and how to structure the film in a way that keeps the audience interested, even if they have the ability to stop the film at any moment."
Along with the two projects mentioned above, Netflix's first animated film - "Lost in Starlight" written and directed by Han Ji Won will be released. The film tells the love story of an astronaut and a musician, voiced by Kim Tae Ri and Hong Kyung.
According to Han Ji Won, this is an opportunity as it has been a long time since an animated film aimed at an older audience was released. "I am really happy to work on a project that is difficult to do in Korea, which makes this project even more meaningful."
Also according to the Korean newspaper, the remaining 4 projects to be released in 2025 are the horror film "Wall to Wall" by Kim Tae Joon, "Good News" by Byun Sung Hyun, the romantic comedy "Love Untangled" by Nam Koong Sun, the prequel to the film "Kill Boksoon", directed by Lee Tae Sung - who was the assistant director of the original film.
