On the afternoon of September 27, part 2 of the movie "Gyeongseong Creature" aired, continuing the story in Seoul (Korea) in 2024, when Yoon Chae Ok (Han So Hee) meets a new character Ho Jae - who looks exactly like Jang Tae Sang (Park Seo Joon).
According to new Netflix statistics, the film is currently ranked 3rd in the global TV show category after only 2 days of showing.
In addition, the film ranked first in 10 countries and territories, including Singapore, Hong Kong (China), Thailand...; ranked top 10 in 80 countries and territories, including Korea, the US, Japan, Germany, France... (according to Flix Patrol).
Previously, part 1 of the film entered the top 10 in 69 countries and territories when it was released last year. Before the release of part 2, the film attracted attention when it entered the list of top 10 most favorite TV dramas in Korea, showing viewers' expectations for changes in the new part, after a series of negative responses.
Unfortunately, despite the change in pace and storytelling, “Gyeongseong Creature” is still criticized as a step backwards for the crew. SCMP believes that shifting the story to modern Seoul, giving the main characters superpowers, or adding villains makes the film feel overloaded.
Meanwhile, Mashable commented that this is not exactly a mystery horror film but more like an old movie suitable for attracting views. The reason is that the film brings a strange plot, endlessly annoying characters and the over-the-top romance between Chae Ok and Tae Sang. The increase in action scenes, the number of villains or the revelation of a sequel cannot gradually reduce negative opinions.
Director Chung Dong Yoon remained calm in the face of mixed reviews. He even expressed satisfaction that the film achieved high ratings overseas and in Japan.
“One of my big goals when I made this work was to hope that foreign audiences could empathize with history instead of just feeling it for themselves. And I think we have achieved initial results,” said Chung Dong Yoon.
According to the director, when planning the film, although the two film settings are 79 years apart (part 1 is set in 1945) and many things have improved during that time, there are still people who commit cruel acts for personal gain and he wanted to clearly depict this on screen.
Speaking further about the production of part 3, Chung Dong Yoon said that he is not sure. However, if he makes the next film, he wants to tell a story about aliens.
