There was a time when Vietnamese showbiz was full of music talent search game shows such as “The Voice - Voice of Vietnam”, “Vietnam Idol”, “Rap Viet”,… and now there are shows looking for faces to launch music groups such as “Sister Who Makes Wave”, “Anh trai say hi”, “Call Me by Fire”… These music shows all attract a huge audience. Many contestants become stars and have a large fan base even when they are just contestants.
However, to maintain the attraction when the show ends, even when being the champion, is not easy. This is also a paradox that occurs in most music search game shows when the champion sinks but the contestants who stop early suddenly become stars.
Among them are names like Ya Suy - Champion of Vietnam Idol 2012, Vu Thao My - Champion of The Voice 2013... They completely sank despite winning the championship of famous music competitions. The reason is that these champions did not have any impressive music products after the competition ended. Another part also comes from the fact that some champions were quite young when they were crowned, so they did not have a clear direction in pursuing art and building their own image.
Or the program "Anh trai say hi" has promoted many young artists, including rapper Negav. Having had many works with HIEUTHUHAI, Negav did not receive much attention until participating in "Anh trai say hi". While his name was on the rise, Negav suddenly got caught up in a "slip of the tongue" scandal when he stood in front of thousands of audiences attending the concert "Anh trai say hi" and asked: "Did you think it was right to let me quit school?". Immediately after that, the male rapper's noisy past was also dug up, causing his career to plummet. He had to continuously apologize to the audience, had his image deleted by the sponsor, and was not allowed to appear at the next concert with his other brothers.
Seize the opportunity to become a star
While the champions of the contests "Rap Viet", "King Of Rap" like De Choat, LCD... disappeared and almost did not release any products that created a buzz, contestants like HIEUTHUHAI, TLinh, Quang Anh Rhyder, Phao... became more famous and successful.
Up to now, one of the most successful names after leaving the music show is HIEUTHUHAI. Only stopping at the Top 8 "King Of Rap" in 2020, HIEUTHUHAI has proven that the title is not everything when becoming a sought-after young artist at the present time. Although there is much controversy surrounding HIEUTHUHAI's fame thanks to his talent or reality TV game shows, it is hard to deny that the male artist knows how to take advantage of opportunities to shine. After leaving "King Of Rap", HIEUTHUHAI released products that attracted public attention, but it was not until after participating in "2 days 1 night" and especially "Anh trai say hi" that HIEUTHUHAI's name became widely known.
In “Anh trai say hi”, the male rapper scored points thanks to his intelligence, leadership and music making ability. With talent, the ability to seize opportunities and a little luck, HIEUTHUHAI only took 4 years to go from Top 8 “King Of Rap” to champion “Anh trai say hi”.
Singer Duc Phuc is also a case of seizing the opportunity to shine among the myriad of contestants coming out of the music competition. Crowned champion of “The Voice of Vietnam 2015”, Duc Phuc caused controversy because of his appearance and voice color which were considered to lack a unique mark. Many audiences thought that the male singer would sink immediately after that like many previous champions, but no, Duc Phuc surprised the audience by accepting plastic surgery to become a completely different person. Along with that, the male singer's musical talent was also recognized through a series of million-view MVs such as “Het thuong can nho”, “Hon ca yeu”,... Champion of “The Voice of Vietnam 2015” was also successful with the strategy of building the image of “the king of Valentine music”.
It can be seen that emerging from music game shows is difficult, but maintaining attraction after leaving the game shows is even more difficult. It requires young artists to have a clear direction, always make efforts, try and maintain their image in the most neat way.
