Vietnamese music is still waiting for a major breakthrough

The Vietnamese music market is becoming vibrant with a series of albums and EPs by Hieuthuhai, Binz, MONO, GREY D, Chi Pu, Noo Phuoc Thinh... Projects are increasingly meticulous in terms of ideas and images, but the large number of songs has not created a "hit" that is strong enough to transcend the boundaries of the fan community.

Artists return to the album race

After a relatively quiet beginning of the year, Vietnamese music began to accelerate from May 2026. The noteworthy point is not only the number of products, but also the return of album form. Many artists no longer bet the entire campaign on a single that easily spreads on social networks, instead building long-term projects with their own themes and image systems.

On May 21, Doan Thuy Trang released "Noi co tich len dong", including 8 songs. The album creates a difference by placing lyrical voices on the background of synthpop, electronic drums, flutes and folk sounds.

This combination helps traditional materials not appear as a simple illustration. Modern harmony and feminine expression create a "neoclassical" spirit, opening up more exploration directions for Vietnamese music in the context of Pop, Rap and R&B dominating.

3 days later, Binz released "Meeting Again", including 11 songs with a total duration of 44 minutes. Notable songs include "Con nít", "Hững hờ", "Nếu" combined with Obito, "King" and "Nợ" combined with Ha Le.

If the image of "Bigcityboi" once associated Binz with a glamorous urban life, "Meeting Again" shows a more contemplative version. The male rapper writes about parents, love, friendship and changes in his perspective on life. The album is organized like diary pages, in which the artists dialogue with loved ones and themselves.

Hieuthuhai also returned in May with the album "Mắt nhắm mắt mở". The project includes songs such as: "Dào gần đây anh thấy anh không bằng ai hết", "Anh nên đi khỏi đây", "Hết yêu", "Người im lặng gặp người hay nói"...

Compared to "Everyone Has to Start Somewhere", the new album leans towards upheavals in love and inner life. Hieuthuhai continues to blur the line between Rap and Pop, using many melodies and narrative styles close to narrative.

On July 27, the male Rapper extended his album life with the EP "Mắt nhắm mắt mở - Studio Live Session", including 4 live recordings.

June continues to witness many comebacks. Noo Phuoc Thinh released the EP "Nhấc máy" on June 2nd, including 4 songs and using calls as a connecting thread. The cooperation with 52Hz shows that the male singer actively seeks energy from the new generation of artists. Chi Pu participates in the MV series as the female lead, contributing to attracting attention in terms of image.

On June 14, Chi Pu released the album "EXs", including 9 songs. This is a noteworthy step when the female singer chose a long-term project to return to the domestic market, instead of just releasing a single MV.

GREY D continues with "Light • Night" on June 19. 6. The album includes 13 songs, continuing to exploit Pop/R&B and the journey from loneliness, hurt to healing. At the end of the month, SpaceSpeakers released "Space Jam, Vol. 3 - Cultural Mosaic", a collection of 13 songs in various Rap, Hip-hop and electronic colors.

By July, MONO became the focus with the album "My dieu ca". The project includes 15 songs such as "Ai lam em buon", "Gio mang huong ve", "Mo ve em", "Sandwich & Story", "Cong tu van tho". MONO connects music with fashion, architecture and the image of "cong tu van tho".

On August 11, Giana introduced "Tuong Tu", a bright Pop version about the feeling of secretly liking someone. Instead of associating "Tuong Tu" with suffering, the female singer sees it as a beautiful vibration of youth. The MV continues to develop the image of "roller girl" in the summer sea space.

Many new points but lack a common "hit

The most positive point of Vietnamese music in the period May - August 2026 is the clear return of album culture. Artists are starting to invest in the theme, song order, sound and image system, instead of releasing discreet singles to follow trends.

Gặp lại" shows that Binz can step out of the glamorous image to tell family stories. "Nơi cổ tích lên ngôi" finds the intersection between lyrical quality, electronic music and folk material. MONO's "Mỹ điệu ca" expands music products into a fashion, image and performance project.

These are noteworthy experiments. Some artists have found ways to bring Vietnamese materials into the contemporary Pop structure instead of copying the original international formula.

However, using old architecture, classic costumes or traditional musical instruments does not mean that products naturally have identity. If there is no research and musical ideology throughout, Vietnamese elements can easily become decorations for MVs or communication campaigns.

Rap and R&B continue to dominate. "Open Eyes" shows Hieuthuhai wants to expand from Rap to Pop rich in melody, while GREY D continues to maintain his forte in "Light • Night".

The positive side is that young artists have clearly understood who they want to become. But clear personality can also become a safe zone. Some albums have many songs but are not changing enough, making the listening experience easily fall into a homogeneous state.

Albums don't necessarily have to be long to prove ambition. Keeping too many songs can dilute the theme and make the best songs not receive commensurate attention.

In the opposite direction, the EP "Nhấc máy" only includes 4 songs, suitable for Noo Phuoc Thinh's comeback. However, the project still needs a song strong enough to surpass the attraction from the male singer's name and the cast of artists participating in the visual part.

The market is also lacking balance between male and female artists. Hieuthuhai, MCK, Binz, MONO, GREY D and Noo Phuoc Thinh account for the majority of attention, while albums of female vocalists have not had a corresponding coverage.

The biggest gap is a "hit" that has the ability to cross the boundaries of the fan community. Many songs achieve high rankings immediately after release thanks to the available number of listeners, but quickly cool down and have not gone deep into popular life.

Export capacity is also limited. Vietnamese artists are increasingly doing well in terms of image, album production and concert organization, but few projects create sustainable listening power abroad. Most products still depend on the domestic market, lack strategies in terms of language, distribution and international cooperation.

Vietnamese music from May to August 2026, therefore, is an ambitious release season but there are no overwhelming products. The bright spot lies in the diversity of genres, album thinking and efforts to build identity. The limitation is that some albums are still long, lack editing, songs have not escaped the safe zone and the market still lacks a common "hit".

Many artists have known how to create their own world. What is missing is a song strong enough to turn personal personality into widespread empathy, bringing products from the scope of fans into the common memory of the public.
