From Hollywood projects, Korean films to cooperation with India and Thailand, the participation of Vietnamese artists in these projects not only opens up opportunities to promote the image of Vietnamese cinema but also poses many challenges in terms of capacity, language and ability to adapt to the international filmmaking environment.
Opportunities from international cooperation projects
In recent years, more and more Vietnamese actors have appeared in foreign film projects or international cooperation films. Although mostly playing supporting roles, this presence still shows a trend of expanding cooperation between Vietnamese cinema and major markets in the region.
One of the recent notable cases is actress Tue Minh when she appeared in the Korean action - detective film "I, The Executioner". The work features Korean stars such as Hwang Jung-min and Jung Hae-in. In the film, Tue Minh plays a Vietnamese girl living in Korea, becoming an important character to help the police track down the perpetrator.
According to the actress's sharing, she received an audition invitation from a company recruiting actors for foreign projects in Vietnam and had to go through many rounds of selection before officially participating in the film. Tue Minh's appearance in the work also attracted the attention of Vietnamese audiences when the film was released in theaters.
Not only individual projects, many international co-productions are being announced with the participation of Vietnamese actors. For example, actress Kha Ngan plays the female lead in the Vietnam-India co-production film "Love in Vietnam", paired with Indian actor Shantanu Maheshwari. Meanwhile, young actress Hoang Ha is expected to appear alongside Korean star Lee Kwang-soo in the romantic film project "Dream of You".
Another project that is also being noticed is the Vietnam-Thai co-production film "Ghost Bride", in which actress Rima Thanh Vy plays the female lead, acting with Thai singer-actor Jaylerr.
On a broader scale, some Vietnamese artists have participated in international film projects before. Typical is Ngo Thanh Van, who has appeared in many Hollywood films such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Bright, The Old Guard or The Creator.
Recently, the information that Tran Thanh participated in the Korean historical drama The Sword - A Legend of the Red Wolf with actor Park Bo-gum also attracted great attention from domestic audiences. Although the details of the release date have not been announced, the participation of a Vietnamese artist in a large-scale project of Korean cinema is considered a noteworthy sign for the trend of international cooperation.
Challenges and expectations for Vietnamese cinema
Although the number of Vietnamese actors participating in international films is increasing, most still take on small or supportive roles. This reflects the reality that stepping into the international film market still faces many barriers.
One of the biggest challenges is foreign language skills and adaptability to a professional film environment. International film crews often have strict production processes, requiring actors to work with high intensity and strict discipline.
In addition, differences in acting style are also factors that make it difficult for many actors to participate in foreign projects. Each country's cinema has a different way of telling stories and building characters, requiring actors to flexibly adjust their acting methods to suit the director's requirements.
However, the increasing appearance of international cooperation projects still brings positive expectations for Vietnam's film industry. When foreign filmmakers choose Vietnam as a setting or production cooperation, the opportunity for domestic actors to participate in international projects is also expanded.
The fact that young faces such as Kha Ngan, Hoang Ha or Rima Thanh Vy are selected in international cooperation projects shows the potential of the new generation of actors.
From another perspective, the success of actors who have participated in foreign films such as Ngo Thanh Van also motivates many Vietnamese artists to try their hand in the international market. Although this path is not easy...
