Must create a rich and diverse film ecosystem

The 24th Vietnam Film Festival (VFF) taking place in Ho Chi Minh City has many exciting activities, including the Workshop "Developing the film industry in the new era" with many interesting stories, raising issues and solutions for sustainable development of Vietnamese cinema.

To go far, you have to stick to the roots

No longer just speeches but opinions expressed directly and frankly by delegates through two discussion sessions coordinated by Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh Huong, Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Galaxy Group, Executive Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Galaxy Studio. It can be said that the picture of Vietnamese cinema is vibrant in the two years 2024 and 2025. In 2024, Vietnamese films accounted for 42% of box office revenue, with revenue of about VND1,900 billion, in 2025, this rate was 62%, with nearly VND3,000 billion. High-grossing Vietnamese films are not only entertaining but also artistic and humane, especially historical films and revolutionary wars. The first session of the workshop has the theme "Developing the film industry in the new era". Dr. Tran Thi Phuong Lan - Director of the Department of Culture - Arts, Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department - emphasized that the keyword "new era" is a new stage of national development...

Culture is placed on par with political, economic and social fields. How can the Party's cultural policies ensure the right ideological orientation and promote the creative freedom of artists?

Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son - Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society - stated: To develop the film industry, it is necessary to create a rich and diverse film ecosystem. To create a cinema ecosystem, there needs to be a direct legal corridor, which is the Cinema Law. But there is still a need for laws and other policies, the bottleneck encountered here is the culture and art entangled in the Land Law, Management and Use of Public Assets, especially tax policies and public-private cooperation in the cultural field...

We must create a "five-flowing flower race" effect to create for all parties to participate and benefit together in cinema, such as creating a Cinema Fund to regulate and create different film genres.

The weakest link in the current film ecosystem is human resources. Director Victor Vu shared: An artist must always learn and innovate, because audience tastes and technology require constant updating. We must invest carefully in each film in terms of budget, time, and effort. We must keep Vietnamese identity in the story, traditional cultural values always sustainable, how to express them delicately, to touch the emotions of the audience.

Regarding the story of international integration, Dr. Tran Thi Phuong Lan emphasized: International integration is an inevitable story, but national awareness is always put first, to absorb and contribute to the development of civilization and human culture.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son: Tax policies need incentives to attract foreign film crews to us, so that we can gain more experience. We must increase the organization of international film events in Vietnam and attend international film festivals abroad.

Technology supports cinema effectively but humans are still the key

In session 2, the key question was "How has the application of technology in the film industry supported filmmakers and enhanced the experience for the audience?" - Director Dang Thai Huyen said: Technology as a tool to support the film's appearance is more complete while the sublimation belongs to artists. And she pointed out that when filming "Red Rain", the film crew had to borrow an ancient brick from Quang Tri ancient citadel and then go to the brick kilns to make bricks of similar size and material, to recreate and build the ancient citadel for filming. The post-production stage is just to emphasize the background for the complete frame.

Mr. Hang Minh Loi - founder of Lumination - said: When there are no conditions to build a magnificent film studio like in many countries, it is necessary to use AI technology effectively. Use AI to help filmmakers measure audience tastes.
