According to data from KOBIS of the Korean Film Council, the movie "The King's Warden" has grossed a total revenue of about 142.523 billion won (about 94.2 million USD) since its release on February 4. Previously, the top position belonged to "The Super Difficult Profession" with revenue of 139.6 billion won, and "The Battle of the Sea" ranked second with 135.7 billion won.
As of the evening of March 23, "The King's Warden" had sold 14,757,108 tickets, becoming the third highest-grossing film in Korea after surpassing two blockbusters "Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds" and "Promise to Dad". Currently, the two Korean films with a higher audience than "The King's Warden" are "The Battle of the Sea" (reaching a total of 17.61 million tickets at the Korean box office) and "The Super Difficult Profession" (16.26 million tickets).
Since its release, "The King's Warden" has continuously set records. In addition to becoming the first Korean film in nearly two years to surpass the 10 million ticket mark, achieving this achievement after only 31 days of release, this is also the 25th Korean film to reach the 10 million viewership mark and the 4th historical film to do this in Korea.
Set in 1457 in Cheongnyeongpo - a remote location in Yeongwol district, Gangwon province (Korea), the film revolves around village chief Eom Heung Do (Yoo Hae Jin) - who decides to live with exiled king Danjong (played by Park Ji Hoon).
The King's Warden" received many positive reviews thanks to the impressive acting of the cast, helping viewers deeply sympathize with the pain of the young king and the people who wholeheartedly supported him. The appeal of the work not only helps Yoo Hae Jin and Park Ji Hoon consolidate their names, but also "ignites" a wave of tourism to historical sites associated with the story of the young king.
In addition, the media expects "The King's Warden" to be a breakthrough contributing to "pulling" audiences back to theaters, when works on the big screen are not only attractive in terms of image and content but also in terms of message and historical value. In addition to Korea, "The King's Warden" is scheduled to be released in Vietnamese cinemas on April 10 with the title "Under the Shadow of the House".
