Mary Kills People is a remake of the Canadian drama of the same name.
The film revolves around Woo So Jung (Lee Bo Young) - a female doctor and her university friend Choi Dae Hyun (Kang Ki Young) who provide illegal anthology services for patients with nanoscopic diseases.
To expose So Jung, police officer Ban Ji Hoon (Lee Min Ki) pretended to be Jo Hyun Woo - a terminal brain tumor patient with only 6 months left to live and approach her.
Right before it aired, Humanitarian Death received mixed reviews for its many bloody, violent, and nunity scenes, along with the theme of death assist and humanistic death.
This is also the main reason why the show did not record a high number of viewers when it aired, even though it was shown during MBC's golden weekend schedule.
According to Nielsen Korea, the drama opened with a rating of 3.2% and dropped to 2.1% in episode 2. In episode 3 (evening of August 8), the viewership rating was only 1.8% - lower than the 5.5% of the movie "Miracle Team" and 2.3% of the movie "The Great Khan" shown at the same time frame.
The majority of viewers commented that with heavy content, "causing" viewers to be like "The Death of Humanity", showing on the station instead of OTT (online) is somewhat a waste of resources.
On the other hand, with the work lasting 12 episodes, adding the love line between the male and female leads and their burning kiss in episode 2 is unnecessary compared to the story line.
In addition, in a scene, the character revives after using little medicine and the female lead uses a pillow to suffocate them, making viewers feel uncomfortable because it is not ethical.
However, there is still a part of the audience supporting the work. The acting of Lee Bo Young and Lee Min Ki was praised for being sociable and compatible.
Previously, the two actors said that they had carefully studied the characters to express, as this is a work that reflects social issues and many things worth pondering.
However, with the current mixed controversies, The Death of Humanity is unlikely to increase ratings, even if the casts acting is from a real cast.
