Recently, movies that were once known to audiences in Korea have become a source of material for many television and streaming projects.
Instead of just exploiting webtoons or online novels, producers are starting to expand to films with available audiences and recognition.
One of the notable projects is "Mysterious Love Story", a remake of the movie "Love Curse" released in 2011, which starred Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ki.
The TV series starring Park Eun Bin and Yang Se Jong retains the premise of a female character who can see ghosts but has changes in character and setting.
Along with that, "The Scandal" is also being developed by Netflix from the 2003 movie "Untold Scandal", with the participation of Lee Mi Sook, Bae Yong Joon and Jeon Do Yeon. The new project brings together Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook and Nana.
In fact, bringing a movie to the small screen is not a new trend in Korea. Previously, some works such as "Our Legendary Friend" (2009), "Agent Level 7" (2013), "The Hidden Beauty" (2018) and "The Fake King" (2019) were also adapted in this direction.
However, in recent years, the Korean drama market has mainly witnessed an increase in works adapted from webtoons and novels. Remaking movies was therefore no longer popular, before reappearing.
At the end of last year, Disney+ released "Game Control", a series developed from the 2017 movie "The Virtual City". Netflix also has "Human Vapor", a project directed by Korean director Yeon Sang Ho based on the 1960 work "The Human Vapor" by Japanese director Ishiro Honda.
One of the reasons why remake projects are noticed is the ability to take advantage of the available level of recognition. Released works may already have a certain number of fans, helping producers have more basis to promote new projects.
In addition, stories that were only told in about 2 hours have more time when switched to TV series, creating conditions for the crew to expand content lines and build characters.
The appearance of actors such as Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook, Park Eun Bin also contributes to attracting attention to this trend, in the context of the increasingly competitive Korean television market and online platforms.
