“One Win” is a reunion between Song Kang Ho and Shin Yeon Sik, the director and screenwriter of “Uncle Samsik.”
The film revolves around Kim Woo Jin - a downtrodden volleyball coach, who has a miserable life with many consecutive failures but still bets on winning for his team with the goal of keeping the team active.
Regarding the reason for returning to the project, Song Kang Ho said he was attracted by the idea of building the character Woo Jin.
“While many films delve into life, this one depicts the small victories in life through volleyball. Whether it is regaining confidence or the process of finding victory, it is a simple yet meaningful and light-hearted story.
After taking on a series of intense roles in various projects such as “Crash Landing”, “Money Machine”, “Uncle Samsik”, I wanted to take on a more cheerful role that brings a sense of happiness and simplicity”.
Also according to the Korean "Emperor", the film's title "one win" has a deep, symbolic meaning.
“I believe that one win can lead to 100 wins or even 1,000 wins. Although the movie is based on volleyball, it tells anyone that they can win once and one win can lead to 100 wins, making the movie full of hope.”
Meanwhile, director Shin Yeon Sik hopes that “One Win” will be a warm and inspiring film that every family can enjoy. He emphasized that the film does not depict a championship, but only a single victory.
“A lot of people think that people dream of winning championships or becoming real champions, but in real life, I think people live by achieving their own small, unique victories that no one else knows about. I believe the audience will sympathize with that.”
In addition to Song Kang Ho, the film features Park Jung Min (as Kang Jung Won - the owner of the volleyball team), Jang Yoon Ju (as Bang Su Ji - the captain of Pink Storm), as well as a cameo by "volleyball goddess" Kim Yeon Koung, and two famous stars of the 90s - Kim Se Jin and Shin Jin Sik.
Despite being considered to have the advantage of having a famous cast, sports-themed films in Korea are often not very popular. For example, previously, the films “Steel Steps” (played by Im Siwan), “Dream Team” (played by IU, Park Seo Joon), “Victory Dance” (played by Hyeri)... were all unsuccessful in terms of revenue.
On the other hand, recent film projects of male lead Song Kang Ho such as "Crash Landing", "The Broker", "Money Machine" did not perform well at the box office, so the possibility of "One Win" causing a fever when it is released in December is unlikely.
