The role of Binh in The War in the Air was the first time Thanh Son tried his hand at the action genre. Can it be said that you have stepped out of your comfort zone?
- Actually, when I decided to go to the South to try my hand at cinema, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. When acting in an action film, I was worried but also wanted to challenge myself. I don't have experience acting in action films, so I find everything difficult.
The reason I participated in the audition was because the project had Mr. Ham Tran as director. At that time, I did not know that other actors such as Mr. Thai Hoa and Kaity Nguyen were also present, it was only because of Mr. Ham Tran that I decided to participate.
With a role that is heavy in both psychology and action, and requires connection with many co-stars, how did Thanh Son overcome those challenges?
- What worries me most is that there are only 4-5 days of practice at the practice ground, then there is a rehearsal for all actors to perform from start to finish like a stage. After that, the director and crew will calculate the lighting, camera angles, and design. Therefore, the beating I practiced in the gym was completely different from the last beating that was filmed. I need to react in each scene, react as quickly as possible.
I also experienced the feeling of punching in the face of another person for the first time. I felt shaken and spent a lot of time practicing.
In recent years, Thanh Son has shifted his direction to acting in movies with a role in "Love by mistake for a best friend". However, this film did not have the expected results, not leaving much of an impression on him. Will that country put pressure on you when you come to "The War in the Air"?
- "Love by mistake for a best friend" can be said to be my greeting to the Southern audience, marking my return after many years of absence on the big screen. I took on a supporting role, but there was not much screen time for me.
It was not until The War in the Air that I became confident when I received the main role in a movie. It was not until Scent of the burning Grass that I became the main character in a movie.
When mentioning Thanh Son, the audience remember him as a screen god, often playing the psychological and emotional genre. Are you afraid that the audience will compare you with actors who have been acting in action films for a long time?
- I don't have much expertise in action. My department could be the genre of psychology. However, if I was chosen, I liked the themes of crime, horror, action, then came social psychology. In addition to the excitement, I was excited to participate in death in the air. First of all, I got to act in the genre I fell in love with. Now, I am happy to have tried my best. As for how the audience will receive it and the results, I will wait.
Previously, Thanh Son had acted in a film also with the aviation theme of Love Than the Sky but played a pilot. How does the difference between the two roles give you a special experience?
- These two roles are completely different. In Love More Than the Sky, the story revolves around team relationships, affection, and family. As for The War in the Air, I do not look at the person I love but the enemy, there are many fiery scenes and actions. The pace and genre of the two films are also completely different.
"Death in the air" with the characteristics of a narrow space, many close-up scenes, many bloody action scenes is an unforgettable experience for Thanh Son?
- Every day, my crew and I work together, filming together in a very narrow space. For 30 days, I worked with everyone and had many happy memories. The actors and I are also close and intimate, which helps us get along when acting together.
There are many action scenes in the film, but fortunately none of the actors are seriously injured. The bruises and pain are inevitable.
Actor Vo Dien Gia Huy also had a Ngoi ruff. You still ignore it and continue filming, but I feel very worried.
