Beauty in classic movies
"When the Tenth Month Comes?" is a film directed by People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh, first released in 1984. It is considered one of the classics of Vietnamese revolutionary cinema. In 2008, CNN rated the work as one of the 18 best Asian films of all time.
"When Will October Come" tells about the fate, pain, and loss of people during wartime and how they share and sympathize with each other to overcome adversity.
In the film, Meritorious Artist Le Van plays Duyen, a wife who visits her husband at the southwestern border. Upon arriving, she is shocked to hear that her husband has died.
On the way home, Duyen fainted from the pain. She fell into the river and was fortunately saved by teacher Khang. Duyen asked Khang to keep the news of her husband's death a secret, and occasionally pretended to be her husband and wrote letters to the family to reassure them.
For a long time, Duyen had to endure the pain of losing her husband. At the same time, she also had to accept the criticism of her relatives and neighbors about her relationship with Khang.
Le Van starred in "When the Tentk Month Comes?" at the age of 26 when her beauty was at its peak. She had the figure of a dancer, a pure Vietnamese face, and sparkling, wet eyes.
Talking about Le Van's beauty at that time, artist Dang Luu Viet Bao, who played Nam - Duyen's husband, had to exclaim in admiration. He said that anyone who saw Le Van was stunned, almost motionless.
With Duyen in "When Will October come", Le Van depicts the iconic image of Vietnamese women at that time. Duyen has the beauty of sacrifice, silent endurance, and devotion to family, husband and children.
Born into a family with a tradition of art, Le Van not only has beauty but also possesses good acting ability. Duyen's pain and psychological development in the film are portrayed by her very truthfully, touching the audience's hearts.
The role helped her win the Golden Lotus Award at the 7th Vietnam Film Festival in 1985. At the same time, this is also one of the classic works in Le Van's career.
Beauty goes with the years
"When the Tenth Month Comes?" is not the only work that helped Le Van's beauty become a legend. In nearly 2 decades of acting, the beauty symbolizing the image of Vietnamese women in the past has been portrayed by her through many works, typically "Sister Dau", "Thuong nho dong que", "Coordinates of Death", "Thang Bom", "Kiep phu du", "Dem hoi Long Tri"...
"Sister Dau" was adapted by director Pham Van Khoa from the novel "When the light is out" by writer Ngo Tat To, the film was produced in 1980. Enjoying the work, the audience will surely remember the image of the female lead character played by Le Van.
In the context of poverty and debt, facing a sick husband and a bunch of children, the gentle and weak woman had to struggle against the adversity of fate.
Sister Dau was willing to work hard to take care of her husband, raise her children, bear the burden of high taxes, fight against the tyrants and bullies in the village, or even had to sell her daughter to protect her husband's life.
The image of a hard-working rural woman, immersed in the worries of making a living, by Le Van, gives the audience a different perspective on Vietnamese women in the past. No longer the beauty of silent sacrifice, Chi Dau knows how to stand up and fight to protect her family and loved ones.
In the works "Thuong nho dong que", "Thang Bom", "Coordinates of Death"..., Le Van constantly changes with different character images, from gentle, resigned women to strong, modern women... Her acting experience accumulated over time makes each of her roles more profound, leaving an impression on the audience.
Le Van retired from her film career in 1996 when she was still quite young. But during nearly two decades of acting, she devoted herself to the roles of her life, making her beauty and many of the characters she portrayed become classics, lasting over the years.
