Current status of two national treasures with ancient bronze drums over 2,000 years old

The bronze drums of Hoang Ha and Ngoc Lu are two of the national treasures on display and preserved at the National Museum of History.

Strictly protected treasures

According to Lao Dong on the afternoon of May 29, when entering the Vietnam National Museum of History (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi), people and tourists must follow strict procedures.

Right at the entrance to the indoor exhibition area, the museum hung a sign regulating 7 things to do, including not bringing weapons, flammable substances, explosives, or toxins into the exhibition space.

Before going inside, people and tourists must leave all their luggage and belongings (except money and jewelry) in the iron cabinet placed outside. This regulation was also reminded by the controller. This helps to minimize the risk of insecurity for artifacts.

Inside, the two ancient bronze drums Ngoc Lu and Hoang Ha are displayed right in the middle of the entrance, making it easy for visitors to observe and visit the museum.

National artifacts and treasures - including two bronze drums - are placed in a thick, transparent glass cage, impactproof and under high pressure.

Not only are they simply protective equipment, these glass cages are also designed modernly, in harmony with the exhibition space, ensuring both aesthetic and maximum safety for the artifact.

Because it is placed in glass cages, people and tourists always keep a certain distance from the treasures when visiting.

At the national treasure exhibition area, a security camera system is also installed on the ceiling of the exhibition house in large quantities, operating 24/7, helping the security team immediately respond if there are signs of violations.

In addition, the museum also arranges staff to sit at the entrance to observe and monitor to promptly grasp the situation if an incident occurs.

The value of treasures

The Hoang Ha bronze dong and the Ngoc Lu bronze dong belong to the Dong Son culture, dating back about 2,000 - 2,500 years and have been recognized as national treasures according to Decision 1426/QD-TTg dated October 1, 2012 of the Prime Minister.

According to information from the National Museum of History, the Hoang Ha bronze drum was discovered in 1937 in Hoang Ha village, Van Hoang commune, Phu Xuyen district, Hanoi. The trunk is made of copper, with a surface diameter of 78.5cm, a foot diameter of 79.9cm and a height of 61.5cm.

Hoang Ha drum has a balanced shape, sophisticated decorative pattern, including 4 parts: face, mourning, body and drum leg.

In particular, the drum surface is out of the funeral, in the middle of the sun casting 16 rays, surrounded by 15 patterns with types of learning, tangent circle with middle dots ... The dominant pattern describes the stilt house, dancer, bronze drums, wandering birds in the opposite direction.

The reed Drum, carved with images of 6 boats moving in the opposite direction of the brass, with people rowing boats, soldiers holding weapons, and scene of prizes and lost birds.

The cylindrical drum body is standing, decorated withammetrical patterns and the person is dressed up and dancing.

The drum legs are shaped like a conical hat.

The patterned ribbon decorates the vivid bronze drum, reflecting the material and spiritual life of the rich people of Dong Son. At the same time, the pattern ribbon also expresses the liveliness and profound awareness of rice growers.

Along with Hoang Ha Dong, Ngoc Lu Dong drum is being kept at the National History Museum. The drum has a diameter of 79.3cm, a diameter of 80cm, 63 cm high, is one of the special artifacts of the ancient Vietnamese cultural heritage.

Ngoc Luong was discovered in 1983 at Tran Thuy dyke, Nhu Trac commune, Nam Xang district (now Binh Luc, Ha Nam), then brought to worship at Ngoc Lu communal house.

In April 1903, the Vientiane Institute collected the Ngoc Lu Bronze Thron to the Louis Finot Museum (National Museum of History).

According to the assessment, Trong Ngoc Lu is the most beautiful drum in the Dong Son bronze drum group. The trunk has a perfect beauty, harmonious and balanced shape, and extremely sophisticated decorative patterns.

The trunk is gray blue with 4 parts including face, belly, torso and empty legs.

The decorative patterns of Dong Ngoc Lu's bronze are concentrated on his face, belly and body. Specifically, the middle of the 14 rays of the sun is cast, 16 pattern strips are cast around the shape of the symmetrical axis, the next circle has a middle spot.

Decorative tapes depict scenes of activities, festivals, bronze drums, season prayers, rice pounding... moving in the wrong direction with the clock.

The drum evidence is curved evenly, with 6 shapes of ships, warriors, and birds. The vertical drum body is decorated with a person's face dressed up and dancing in a rectangular tree.

Drum legs are shaped like petted hats.

Ngoc Lu decoration is considered a rare artifact, valuable in many aspects of Vietnamese history and culture. The decoration theme on drums brings together all the knowledge, profound human concept as well as the talent, art, and soul of the Vietnamese people.
