After nearly 8 months of rough construction, Vietnam's first light railway line LRT has officially entered the completion phase, striving to ensure the completion progress to serve APEC 2027. The investor Sun Group and the consortium of contractors have just held a groundbreaking ceremony for the bidding package for supplying and constructing the installation of the light railway line LRT Phu Quoc railway system, and at the same time carried out the operation of installing standard tracks for the Phu Quoc light railway line (LRT).
The bidding package for supplying and constructing the installation of the LRT Phu Quoc light railway track system is implemented by the consortium of Vietnam Railways Corporation and China Railway 16th Group Co., Ltd. (CRCC16). The installation of this high-tech track system will be synchronously integrated on all three structural segments including elevated, ground and underground.

Mr. Le Hoai Phong, Project Commander of LRT Phu Quoc, Sun Group, affirmed that this is an important milestone for the project and for the progress of building a modern, synchronous and sustainable transportation system for Pearl Island.
Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Railways Corporation, representative of the contractor consortium, said: "We have constructed many projects, but this is an unprecedented project. The construction of urban railway line No. 1 on extremely difficult terrain, unfavorable weather, along with urban train technology applied for the first time in Vietnam is truly an extraordinary effort.
Phu Quoc LRT construction site has gone through difficult geological challenges and harsh weather on the island during the rainy season. Currently, the large construction site still maintains a working pace of 3 shifts continuously day and night with nearly 600 engineers and workers sticking to it.
As of the beginning of August 2026, the project has recorded an actual disbursed capital flow of 1,800 billion VND. The smooth coordination between the investor and the joint venture of contractors, domestic and foreign partners has created a solid launching pad to bring the project to transform from foundation construction to parallel construction of rough construction and installation of technical equipment and technology.
When put into commercial operation, this light railway line will shorten travel time from Phu Quoc International Airport to resorts, entertainment areas of the South Island and APEC Convention Center to only about 20 minutes.
The project also sets a target of completing the trial run in June 2027 and commercial operation in August 2027.
Besides the efforts of the units, leaders of An Giang province and Phu Quoc special zone also regularly visit, inspect the field and give gifts to encourage the construction force, praising the spirit of working overnight, organizing 3 shifts and 4 teams of units at the large construction site of APEC projects.
Provincial leaders deeply shared the hardships of the workforce when having to continuously construct in unusual rainy and storm weather. At the same time, they reminded that construction speed must be ensured, but safety is paramount. During construction, attention must be paid to the drainage system, not allowing flooding to affect people's lives and the image of Phu Quoc tourism.
