3 metro lines simultaneously accelerate
At Pham Van Bach underground station (Truong Chinh street) on Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong), workers are constructing steel cages and surrounding walls about 534m long and 41m deep. This item helps stabilize the ground, waterproof and load-bearing for the station.
Not far away, Le Thi Rieng station on Cach Mang Thang Tam street is also bustling with cranes, excavators and specialized equipment. According to Mr. Phan Cong Bang - Head of Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR), these two stations will install TBM tunnel boring machines, so they are prioritized for construction, striving to basically complete in the third quarter of 2027.
Started in January 2026, Metro Line 2 is currently the fastest progress project among the metro lines being implemented. The line is 11.27km long, including 10 underground stations, 1 elevated station and Tham Luong depot, with a total capital of more than 55,000 billion VND from the city budget. The project is expected to be completed in 2030, connecting the central area with the Northwest gateway.
In the south of the city, the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project is entering a bustling construction phase. On the Soai Rap River, many steel pipe piles, surrounding pipes and positioning frames have been installed to construct the cable-stayed bridge foundation about 920m long, main span 360m.
In the Can Gio station area, machinery is mobilized to build a station area of about 1.2ha along with depots and the Transport Operation Center (OCC) on an area of about 25.5ha.
About 53.8km long, the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro was started at the end of 2025 in the BOO form with a total investment of more than 102,000 billion VND. This high-speed railway line aims to be completed in 2028, shortening the travel time from the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio to about 13 minutes.
The Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem Metro section is being geologically surveyed with dozens of drill bits, serving the completion of technical solutions for the underground line, especially the section crossing the Saigon River. The line is about 6.2km long, completely underground. The terminal station in Thu Thiem will connect with the North - South high-speed railway central station and the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, creating an important traffic hub between urban metro, national railway and Long Thanh airport.
Complete procedures to start construction of 5 more routes
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is also accelerating investment procedures to start construction of 5 more metro lines in 2026, creating a foundation for completing a 255km long urban railway network by 2030.
Prominent is the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, about 47.7km long, connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Long Thanh International Airport. The project has a preliminary total investment of about 175,000 billion VND, expected to be implemented in the form of BT (build - transfer). The city sets a target to start construction on September 2 this year and put it into operation in 2030.
When completed, the route will become a large volume transport corridor, shortening travel time between the center of Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh airport, and connecting with the existing metro network.
In addition, three Metro lines No. 6 (Tan Son Nhat - Phu Huu), Thu Dau Mot - Tao Dan and Binh Duong New City - Suoi Tien are under geological survey to complete the pre-feasibility study report and submit it to competent authorities for approval.
In which, Metro No. 6, nearly 23km long, will connect Metro No. 2 in the Ba Queo area, passing through terminals T1, T2, T3 of Tan Son Nhat airport before extending to Phu Huu to connect with the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line.
The remaining two routes play a role in strengthening regional linkages. The Thu Dau Mot - Tao Dan route will connect the Binh Duong (old) area with the center of Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to reducing the load on National Highway 13; and the new Binh Duong City - Suoi Tien route directly connects with Metro Line 1, forming a large-volume public transport axis between the central city and satellite cities.
Along with that, Ho Chi Minh City will invest in extending Metro Line 2 from Tham Luong to the Northwest Urban Area with a length of about 30km. When connected to the two sections Ben Thanh - Tham Luong and Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem, the entire route will form a radial urban railway axis in the Southeast - Northwest direction.
Mr. Mai Van Minh (49 years old, representative of the contractor constructing Pham Van Bach station, Ben Thanh - Tham Luong Metro line) informed that Pham Van Bach station is a technically demanding item of Metro Line No. 2. The unit is mobilizing maximum manpower and equipment, deploying many construction teams to ensure progress, while strictly controlling quality and labor safety.
This is a key infrastructure project of Ho Chi Minh City, so the entire team is determined to complete it on schedule. We are proud to contribute to building the metro line connecting the center with the Northwest gateway of the city. Each item completed on schedule will contribute to bringing the metro line into operation soon, reducing congestion and creating motivation for Ho Chi Minh City's development" - Mr. Minh said.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (42 years old, geological survey drilling worker on the Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem Metro line) said that survey work requires high accuracy because it is the basis for tunnel design and construction. Every day, the brothers work from early morning to meet the progress but still put quality first.
Contributing to a key metro project of the city is a source of pride and motivation for us to strive harder. We hope the project will be completed on schedule so that people can soon have another modern and convenient traffic route" - Mr. Thanh shared.
