On September 22, An Giang Provincial People's Council held the 6th session (specialized session) to approve many important draft resolutions.
In which, it agreed on the policy of establishing wards under An Giang province, based on the original natural area and population size of the old commune. 22 wards include: Chau Thanh, Tan Hiep, Giong Rieng, Go Quao, An Bien, An Minh, Vinh Phong, Hon Dat, Kien Luong, Ba Chuc, Thoai Son, Phu Hoa, An Chau, Vinh An, Chau Phu, Vinh Thanh Trung, Vinh Hau, An Phu, Phu Tan, Cho Moi, Long Dien, Hoi An.
According to An Giang Provincial People's Committee, the adjustment of An Giang Provincial Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050 has been approved in Decision No. 676/QD-UBND of the Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee and the planning orientations and urban development programs have been approved by competent authorities, identifying 22 communes as playing important core roles in key functional areas, economic corridors, key development linkage axes and strategic socio-economic sub-regions of An Giang province.
Combined with the orientation of socio-economic corridors and inter-provincial linkage axes, the development space of An Giang province is organized according to 5 specialized socio-economic sub-regions. In addition to Phu Quoc special zone, the orientation of 4 socio-economic sub-regions belonging to the land space of An Giang province is divided by 2 routes National Highway 80C and National Highway 91D. Each region is positioned based on natural advantages, location and connectivity, ensuring specialization and forming dynamic areas throughout the province.
With its location distributed on corridors, inter-provincial linkage axes and socio-economic sub-regions, 22 communes established wards have favorable conditions to connect with the central urban areas of the province, the Mekong Delta region, international border gates and seaport systems in the region, creating great room for urban development.
From the advantages of geographical location, transport connectivity, development space, industry, logistics, urban areas, services, tourism and high-quality agriculture according to the An Giang Provincial Planning Amendment for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050 and planning orientations approved by competent authorities, the establishment of the above-mentioned wards is necessary to form commune-level development centers with a spreading role, creating motivation to promote socio-economic growth, improve the effectiveness of state management and organize the development space of An Giang province in a modern, multi-polar, regional and sustainable direction.
An Giang province has 9,888.85 km2 of natural area and a population of 5,062,758 people; has 102 commune-level administrative units, including 85 communes, 14 wards and 3 special zones. The ratio of wards to the total number of commune-level administrative units reaches 13.72%. East borders Dong Thap province and Can Tho city; West borders the Gulf of Thailand; South borders Ca Mau province and Can Tho city; North borders the Kingdom of Cambodia.
After establishing 22 wards, An Giang province did not change in terms of natural area, population size and number of directly subordinate commune-level administrative units, of which the commune level increased by 22 wards and decreased by 22 communes. At that time, the province had 102 commune-level administrative units, including 63 communes, 36 wards and 3 special zones. The ratio of wards to the total number of commune-level administrative units reached 35.29%.
