In early September, after receiving feedback from the people, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters were present at this landfill when garbage trucks were continuing to dump on the landfill, even though the garbage was piled up as high as a mountain.
From National Highway 12B to Cam Co landfill is about 2km, but about 300 meters away, flies and worms have flown all over, with a strong stench.Especially the black water from the landfill along the ditch on the side of the road flows straight into the nearby stream.
It is known that this landfill has been in operation since 2014, with dozens of tons of garbage added every day but not being thoroughly treated, so the garbage is gradually rising, currently nearly as high as the surrounding hills.
According to Mr. Bui Van Tiep, Head of Cam Co hamlet, the landfill is only about 500 meters from the residential area as the crow flies. Therefore, every time there is a wind blowing, the stench "attacks" 50 households in Cam Co hamlet (living along National Highway 12B).
"There is too much untreated waste, causing serious environmental pollution. Not only do they give off an unpleasant smell, flies from the landfill also fly into people's homes. We have repeatedly petitioned, even requested to close the landfill, but it has not been handled yet, said Mr. Tiep.
If households in Cam Co hamlet are pressured by the stench and flies, households in Khat hamlet, Nam Son commune are heavily affected by garbage flowing into the stream leading straight to Khat lake.
According to Mr. Bui Van Vy, Head of Khat hamlet, at the beginning of the rainy season, the water flows black, the stench covers dozens of households in the hamlet. Garbage water poured into Khai Lake affected the rice fields of households.
"Previously, when burning garbage, the hamlet got smoke, but now there is a lot of garbage left, so the stench makes us suffocate. The most worrying thing is the pollution of Khat Lake, the main irrigation lake of the people. We hope that the authorities will consider handling and relocating the landfill to another location" - Mr. Vy said.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Khac Long - Chairman of Muong Dong Commune People's Committee - said: At the end of July 2025, the Commune People's Committee issued a document requesting communes not to bring garbage to this landfill. Recently, Muong Dong commune sent a document to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Phu Tho province, proposing a policy to build a incinerator in this area to treat the amount of waste remaining.
"This is a historical problem, the commune is very interested and focused on handling it. In the immediate future, the commune requested the garbage collection unit to push the garbage up to the area above, and at the same time dig ditches around the landfill to prevent the surrounding surface water from flowing in and dissolving the garbage water. At the same time, increase spraying of disinfectants and disinfectants to reduce the spread of odors and flies and mosquitoes" - Mr. Long emphasized.
