Abandoned 12 billion VND market in Quang Ngai

Dong Ke Market in Quang Ngai was completed in July 2024, but traders still cannot enter to do business, causing frustration among the people.

Dong Ke Market, Tinh Giang Commune, Son Tinh District, Quang Ngai Province, started construction in March 2023, with a total investment of about 12 billion VND. The construction cost was sponsored by Ms. Tran Thi Lam, Chairwoman of Hoa Lam Group, a native of the province, working and living in Ho Chi Minh City. The market is built on an area of 1,800m², including 90 kiosks to meet the buying and selling needs of 150 small traders.

At the end of July 2024, Dong Ke market was completed and handed over to Tinh Giang commune for use and management. However, according to the reporter's records, although the new market has been completed and is the most spacious market in Son Tinh district, it is still closed.

According to the reporter's investigation, since the construction of the new market on the old market ground began, traders have had to set up temporary tents to sell at the stadium area in An Kim village, Tinh Giang commune. Every time there is heavy rain, the stadium ground becomes muddy and dirty, making traders and residents feel fed up.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Thanh Ha (name changed) in An Kim village said indignantly that the new market has been completed for more than 5 months now, but traders have to continue to do business in the muddy, dirty temporary market. On December 28, heavy rain flooded some areas of the market, making it impossible to do business. As Tet is approaching, people are hoping that the commune and district authorities will quickly move traders to the new market to stabilize their lives.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Trieu - Chairman of Tinh Giang Commune People's Committee said that traders are looking forward to entering the new Dong Ke market. However, there is currently no guidance on classifying markets under the authority of the commune or province. Recently, the commune government has also sent documents to the district, and the district has also submitted them to the Department of Industry and Trade. The Department of Industry and Trade informed that it will have to wait until February 2025 for specific guidance on classifying markets.

"The district has agreed to let the People's Committee of Tinh Giang commune continue to submit the auction plan for approval by the district's Finance Department, then hire a unit under the Department of Justice of Quang Ngai province to organize the auction, bringing traders to the market to trade" - Mr. Trieu said.
