On the afternoon of January 14, the Traffic Safety Committee of Can Tho City and an interdisciplinary team inspected the intersections of Tran Hoang Na - Nguyen Hien; Tran Hoang Na - Nguyen Van Cu; Nguyen Van Linh - 3 Thang 2 in Ninh Kieu district.
The delegation inspected the traffic light system; adjusted the traffic organization plan to suit the actual situation and agreed to install additional signs for vehicles turning right at red lights.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters at the Tran Hoang Na - Nguyen Hien intersection, traffic density here is always congested even though it is not rush hour due to vehicles traveling from National Highway 1A, April 30 and February 3 pouring into Nguyen Van Cu to go to Nguyen Van Linh Street (National Highway 91B).
In addition to the large number of vehicles, the short traffic lights here also contribute to congestion (green light lasts 28 seconds, while red light lasts nearly 40 seconds). In addition, many motorbikes stop at red lights in the right turn lane onto Nguyen Hien Street, causing traffic jams.
Not far away, the Tran Hoang Na - Nguyen Van Cu intersection is in a similar situation because the number of red light seconds is 38, the number of green light seconds is 22. However, there is no sign here for "2-wheeled vehicles are allowed to turn right on red light" like the Tran Hoang Na - Nguyen Hien intersection.
At the Nguyen Van Linh - 3 Thang 2 intersection, the number of vehicles passing through this intersection is always crowded. Observation shows that the number of red light seconds and green light seconds are balanced (45 seconds of red light, 42 seconds of green light), and the signs are clear. However, the road markings at this intersection have become blurred and are no longer visible, making it difficult for vehicles to stop at red lights or turn right.
Previously, on January 9, Lao Dong Newspaper reported that at this intersection, the number of red light seconds is 2 to 3 times more than the number of green light seconds. This makes traffic participants tired because they have to wait, especially at hot and humid noon or during rush hour.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper after the inspection, Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan - Chief of Office of Traffic Safety Committee of Can Tho City - said that the unit will issue an urgent document to request Ninh Kieu District People's Committee and affiliated units to review and compile a list of intersections that need to be arranged, reorganized traffic, and adjusted traffic light systems to suit the actual situation.
Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan stated that the City Traffic Safety Committee will request the installation of additional signs for vehicles turning right to create more convenient conditions for traffic participants.
Regarding the implementation of Decree 168, Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan informed that since the Decree took effect, the City Traffic Safety Committee has noticed that people's traffic awareness has increased significantly, there is no longer a situation of running red lights or climbing on sidewalks like before.
