According to Lao Dong Newspaper, at the intersections of 3/2 - Nguyen Van Linh, 30/4 - Nguyen Van Linh, Nguyen Van Cu - Nguyen Van Linh... (in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City), these locations often have 2 or 3 times more red light seconds than green light seconds. This makes traffic participants tired of having to wait, especially at hot and humid noon or rush hour.
Mr. Nguyen Van Danh (34 years old, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province) said that every day he travels from his house near Hospital No. 10 to his workplace in Thoi Binh ward, Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city. Work starts at 8am but he always has to get to work early, because when passing the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh - 3 Thang 2 streets, there is often local congestion during rush hour.
“Currently, this location has a red light signal that lasts 81 seconds and a green light signal that lasts only 29 seconds, causing people to wait a long time and easily leading to local congestion. I think it is necessary to adjust the traffic light signal seconds to balance them out, to avoid people having to wait wearily every morning, affecting their working spirit for the new day, and also when they get off work,” said Mr. Danh.
Ms. Nguyen Kieu Duyen (37 years old, from Tra Vinh province) shared that on January 8, when she was traveling on Nguyen Van Linh street (Ninh Kieu district), there was a case where the red light signal repeated 3 times before the green light for traffic participants to move, causing her and many others to wait for a long time and get tired.
“If the weather is cool, it’s okay, but when the sun is harsh at noon or early afternoon, having to wait at a red light for more than 80 seconds is really frustrating,” said Ms. Duyen.
Many people expressed their hope that the authorities would soon adjust the number of seconds for traffic lights to be reasonable, especially at intersections in the city center. This would help create a comfortable feeling for traffic participants when waiting for red lights, avoiding local congestion and the risk of traffic violations, especially when Decree 168 on traffic violation penalties is being strictly enforced.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan - Chief of Office of Traffic Safety Committee (ATGT) of Can Tho City - said that currently, people's travel demand is very high, especially during the upcoming Lunar New Year, leading to local traffic congestion at some intersections such as 3/2 - Nguyen Van Linh Street, 30/4 - Nguyen Van Linh Street... due to the short number of green light seconds and the many red lights.
At some of these intersections, the previous traffic light setup and lighting phases were not suitable, so they need to be readjusted to facilitate the movement of traffic participants.
According to Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan, the City Traffic Safety Committee will request the route management unit to work with relevant units to organize surveys and re-evaluate to arrange and handle the traffic light system appropriately in the coming time, ensuring convenient traffic for people during the 2025 Lunar New Year.
“Regarding Decree 168, after it took effect, the City Traffic Safety Committee has developed many plans, focusing on propaganda solutions in indirect and direct forms to help people understand the new regulations; at the same time, focusing on handling to help ensure traffic safety in the city is getting better and better,” Mr. Ngoan added.
